**Note: This was written on 20th Dec 2007 so things might have been updated since then. From what Ive seen that's not the case but to take note.
Hi all,
this is seperate from my quick and dirty shots put up this morningwhen the 112 first arrived and in a sense a companion to my PAM 082 comparison review. Here are some shots and eye candy comparing DSN's latest model, gen pics & general replicas of the 112 you can find out there. Pick apart the review too guys, and hope this helps people out.
The 112 is not the most common of Panerai reps, which is quite unfortunate as its such a simple watch which lends itself to being both classy and sporty. It lacks the second hand and therefore doesn't qualify as a chronometer and is thus labeled a "Base" watch. The good side though is that generally these retail (for gens) a couple hundred cheaper than their "seconds" hand brothers.
For the replica industry, there are either DSN 112s, cheap no swan neck asian movements, high beat swan neck (new) movements, modded watches. The pics I have of the general replica watches are of the highbeat new asian movement and are modded watches unless otherwise mentioned. (apologies to the owners of the images, I hope you don't mind me utilising them, if you do, PM me and I'll replace them)
So on to the review; lets look at the front first
DSN vs. Gen (Numbered in red)
1. The tip of the 2 extends too far. It needs to stop abt 1mm beforehand. The tail needs to extend out 0.5mm more as well. The pointed base of it is pretty close but should be more rounded. However this is really nitpicking.
2. Placement is too low. Bottom row should be inline with the top end of the 10 & 2 o'clock markers. It is instead inline with the bottom end. Also, font should be bolder and in white instead of the dark grey.
3. Tail of the 3 stops too soon. It should carry on for another 1mm and curve further inwards.
4. Alignment as well, this should be further downwards. Font should be bolder and font color should be white. A is also in the wrong font. (*Note on font color, the 111H/177H should be greyish white, whereas on most reps they are pure white)
5. Number 6 is not "fat" enough and font is slightly off. L Swiss Made L isn't bad but slightly off in comparison, but not noticeably so, loupe territory.
6. 9 doesn't have sufficient bulge to its head but on initial glance close enough
7. Crown guard is not thick enough at pin portion. Also the crown itself does "look" too thin but measurement wise is supposedly not. Pin is also not flat and flush, but rounded and sunken. Easy mod. (Update: Seems that on some gens, the CG isn't all that thick either at the middle portion, so there is some variation as seen here)
8. Not numbered but DSNs crown is too thin, or at least appears too thin due to excessive beveling on the edges.
REP vs. Gen (Numbered in yellow)
1. Font is completely off for the 2. Utilises sausage dial font
2. Luminor though correct boldness and color is situated too high. About 1mm off
3. Same with this, too low and wrong "A"
4. Font is marginally off for number 6
5. Most obvious tell, L Swiss Made L is far too large in font size, spread out too far apart and not close enough to the edge of dial
6. Crown looks a bit too thin
7. Crown guard isn't thick enough with pin sunken in and rounded slightly
On to the back;
DSN vs. Gen (Numbered in red)
1. Officine Panerai is too bold though font size looks about right.
2. Utilises Novadiac shock protection system instead of Incabloc. No gaps in the circle
3. Wrong OP number, should be 6568, is 6567 (111 OP no.)
*Note, there probably are other differences but very minute ones, please point them out to me as well
REP vs. Gen (Numbered in yellow)
1. Font is thinner but wrong size and spacing
2. Correct shock protection system, but gaps are incorrectly lined up. Should be in line with the dagger.
3. Wrong OP number, should be 6568, is 6567 (111 OP no.)
Note for both DSN & Replica caseback, I believe they have the incorrect serial number (PB no.) engraved. Ain't too sure so do correct me on this. Also the blued screws are painted instead of flame blued. The movement does have some differences too in terms of finish.
Now the sides;
One thing though that is very apparent, the gen crownguards are noticeably thicker. G series crown guards onwards are all very noticeable thicker with a curved upper segment. Both DSNs and rep crownguards just fail completely at this point.
People have also asked about the dimple for this model which is here on the DSN;
Can't find pics of the gen or rep ones.
Last but not least, LUME!
I won't bring in the general replica lume pics because they vary soo much between modders and the non-superlumed reps. Between DSNs and gen, though, they look really close. Only difference would be the too bright/green hands, also a slightly more aquauous shade on the gen.
*update 10 Oct 2009*
DSN has updated his dials, I'm sharing some pics of Sead's custom built 112 with his own CG, T48 crown and DSN dial with custom lume ($400 go geddit)
You can see the dial cutouts are muched imprved and more accurate, especially the 6. The rest of the review is still relevant especially for case, crown and CG.
Conclusions
The dial is wrong. The back is pretty wrong as well with the general replicas with the new highbeat asian clone movement being very accurate. However, between a DSN and the general modded 112s, I would pick the DSN personnally because of the slightly better looking 2 (in the 12) and the much better "L SWISS MADE L" text. Less obvious tells than the normal replicas. But that's just my very biased opinion since I already own the watch
And to finish this off , let have some eye candy of the DSN 112H.
