So my brother in law was over at my place the other day. I showed him the new 388 that i have and he was really impressed. He has a Gen PAM 090 and told me that he had to get rid of his watch winder because apparently his watch has a uni-directional rotor. He looked at mine and said thats strange, yours turns both ways.

This got me thinking and I wanted to do a little research. So i looked at his watch and got the following specs:

opix.jpg

The OP IX is the power reserve variant of the OP III.
It is still based on automatic Valjoux 7750-P1 and features

  • 13 1/4 lignes size
  • 21 jewels
  • Panerai personalisation on the bridges and rotor
  • Glucydur balance
  • 28,800 VPH
  • Incabloc shock protection
  • 42 hours power reserve
It is certified with a C.O.S.C. chronometer certificate.

So this movement is based on the ETA7750 and apparently it is sent out to SOPROD who 'guts it out' and puts in a PR function as well as engraves the rotor and bridges with Panerai markings. This is not a Panerai In-House Movement. Through my research however, i was not able to find out what direction the rotor spins.

In contrary, the p.9000 that we see replicated for the 388 is a Panerai In-House movement and here is what i found out:

p9000.jpg

The P.9000 calibre, created entirely by Officine Panerai and used in a series of Luminor 1950 and Radiomir models, is fitted with various functions: it is an automatic calibre with a 3-day power reserve and a unique technical design which makes these movements immediately recognizable.
The calibre has a diameter of 13¾ lignes and numerous features: two barrels which guarantee 72 hours of power reserve; a single piece rotor which winds by moving in both directions thanks to an automatic ratchet device; a balance wheel with adjusting screws, oscillating at a frequency of 4 Hz; a date display and a seconds reset device which resets the seconds hand, enabling the watch to be synchronized perfectly with a reference time signal.

So i was very happy to know that the rep has a properly spinning rotor, but got me thinking and thought it would be interesting to put it up for discussion here with my fellow PAM fans.

Is this new info for anyone or am i just late to the party. I did not know that there are gen pam models that have Uni-Directional spinning rotors.

I think the uni directional spin is more likely that it winds in one direction as with most auto movements

Now so sure about that. i know that based on the info i provided above, the P.9000 and most likely all inhouse auto movement for Panerai have rotors that spin in both directions.

I just found it very interesting that the modified eta/soprod movement's rotor only spins in one direction.

Does anyone know if there is a technical reason for this?
