to me it simply looks like the 900 rebranded 980 with the machine stopped

It's almost identical to the p900. Possibly optimized for an even cheaper production cost.

My thought was that the balance is no longer free sprung making it easier to make a good rep.

However no rep ever has had free sprung balance wheel.
If there was any interest from VSF in cloning the p900, it would have been done. THe brand is simly not marketable anymore. Neither in gen, nor in rep. Minimal effort on both sides.

I can already see VSF launching a rep with the old P.9000 clone in a few weeks - too fat and with a flying hour. We already know this from the ‘newer’ VSF reps of the more recent models with P.9XX. Unfortunately, this means that VSF is now only mid-tier for Panerai. And I don't think they will develop a P.9XX clone, the market is probably too small for that by now.

Question for the technology pros: Why not use a 9015? The small second to 9 should be feasible with a mod.

Yes I agree, but then you have to re-mold the case that is a big cost too... also the Myota is 70€ retail, perhaps too costly!
