I am in the process of making a couple of my own straps. Is there much difference in a spring bar buckle vs. a screw in type buckle? I have all screw in type buckles atm and have never owned a spring bar type. Is there any difference as far as strength goes? Any help is appreciated kindly.

Most of the strap vendors sell/use both. Screw in seems to be more historic, with regard to PAMs for example, but I’ve heard about problems with the screw holes stripping…making them useless. I thing the good spring bars are an excellent alternative…

if the screws are good, i go with screws... i get lazy and like how i can switch in and out buckles quickly.

It seems to me that the spring bar ones are just trying to "look" like sewn-in buckles. The screw type are pretty obvious. That said, it's pretty easy to spot the spring bar types anyway, so I don't think anyone is being fooled.

I'd say that you should just go for the ones that look the best to your eye (and you the ones you can easily get your hands on, of course). I mean, I'd love to have all GPF-Mod Dep buckles, but they are impossible to find and very expensive. Since nobody seems to want to rep them, you are stuck with the other alternatives like pre-v and gpf screw-in and spring bar along with a few sewn-in options.

Thanks to those who have answered so far.

Do anyone have experience with the strength of the two? I would think that the screw type would do much better in this category. But it seems that some of the major strap makers use the spring bar type. So I am not sure if they hold up as well. I ask because the spring bar type are half the price of the screw type.

Thanks for the replies. One more question.

Does anyone know what gauge (how thick) the original GPF buckles were?

Enzo:

I have wondered about this with Davidesens as I have two of them and like them a lot.
Does the "Mod dept" stamping face up or down on the originals ---or it doesnt matter--just sewn in any old way *a buckle is a buckle is a buckle..etc")

This is a wild guess, because I've never held one in my hands, but I think by pictures they are about 2mm (or maybe just slightly thicker).

Anyone actually have an original?

Thanks for the links PANERA, but none of those are the GPF buckles of old. Neither do they say what guage they are. I think savage_here is probably right I found a side shot picture of one with a 4mm strap and it looks to be half the thickness of the strap.Below is the picture I am talkign about.

Btw, the best place for buckles is panatime.com. They have the best prices.

Thanks for the information enzo. This brings up interesting questions for me.

What material was used for the old style GPF buckles??

Stainless steel is very hard to cut so someone out there must have a press or these buckles may not be stainless steel at all but rather steel with some sort of coating.

Is making a buckle all that difficult? I would have to say yes if using stainless steel but not that hard really if using plain steel and cold spraying it with a zinc coating.

What material is the Davidsen GPF buckle made out of?? If it was very difficult to bend maybe it is stainless but if not, maybe some coated steel or even worse aluminum.

This is all just speculations and questions that I am now asking myself as I look into maybe making my own buckle. I know over at paneristi they have a thread on buckle making, but that was out of aluminum. Anyone ever tried out of steel or stainless steel??

Spring Bars at Lugs??

Just to sidetrack a little, can the screw in bars at the lugs be replaced by spring bars instead?

Thanks enzo again for the information. I had seen that post over at the risti. He used aluminum, which I am not crazy about but may be my only option at this point. Unless I can get a die ;)
