But since the PAM1240 received a separate thread of discussion, I will add some interesting link regarding the device of the date wheel.
It was invented even earlier, but on a rather unique model. Overall, I think for a skeleton, this is a very good solution to read about:

Maybe other brands are already using it, and I missed it, but Panerai claims it's their patented technology.
