I spotted a very unique Panerai on the guy across the aisle from me on a flight into Chicago tonight. Was absolutely gorgeous. I first noticed the number pattern, similar to my 113 (with the 10, 11, 1, 2 etc in smaller font), but on a dark dial.
Upon closer inspection, I noticed the subdials -- three of them, at 9, 6, and 3, all the same color as the main dial. Looked black, but could have been dark blue. The strap was a matte black gator strap, deployant buckle.
First thing I did when I got home (well, after walking the dog and opening the mail) was to get a look at Panerai.com to figure out what model this was.
Based on what I've found, it might be a special edition. Perhaps a 2002 model 105 -- except I would have noticed the red chrono needle at 12, which definitely was not there. My next guess is a 2005 model 224, which has a blue dial, same color subdials, the correct number pattern. It's just that I don't recall the engraved tachymeter scale on the bezel. It could also be a 196 Daylight, but same thing, I don't recall the tachymeter scale on the bezel.
Anyway -- let me know if you guys have other ideas, or if I just happened to spot a rare Panerai not 5 feet away.
