Ok.

So here is what I am trying to build. I spotted it in all its glory in a for sale add on Timezone. It is one of the few L SWISS MADE L I have seen for sale with really good pics to compare to and use as a pattern for building a rep.:

xPAM29B078.jpg

And I had an excellet transaction with Golfbum and got this as a base to start with:

1114forumdg3.jpg

The watch has the rare and correct 2893 GMT movment and Ziggy lume (it glows very nice and keeps DAMN good time) so a HUGE step towards teh most accurate rep possible is already made.

Problems straight off to tackle now:

1. hard to see in the pics from Golfbum, but the Crowngard is some how bent and flattend.......not much but enough to make the CG not symetrical. And most of all, it is bent enough to bug me and to have all of you comment when it is blown up to 50x size on your screen. the CG screws are also marred a good bit too.

solution - spend a sh*tload of time with 1000 and then 2000 grit sandpaper and doing a WHOLE lot of eyeballin'.

2. Crowngaurd lever sucks over all. it is way too far from case and not flush with CG and not finished well and etc. etc. etc.

solution - same as before, sand a bit....eyeball it, sand a bit more......eyeball it, again and again until I like it.

3. The crown......well .........JUST LOOK AT IT! It is terrible and looks NOTHING like the gen in the TimeZone add.

solution - change the damn thing is the ONLY solution

4. The datefont is way too thin and wrong shape

solution - change the date wheel. I am jsut waiting on Lello at this point so this will be done when it comes in.

The watch is also in need of just overall sanding a polishing to get rid of normal panerai everyday wear and tear. i.e. scredriver marks, little dings, and what happens when you wear a watch. And I am sure the CG will get a little more attention too.

So, the progress so far looks like this.

Thoughts?

I know some people may not think so, but to MY EYE the cyclops is the CORRECT size for this particular watch. When I made some rough comparison measurments from the pics, it was confirmed in my opinion.

I will also contend that once the date wheel is changed, and I get through making the case up to my standards finish wise (removing ALL machine marks from lugs and between lugs etc) that the serial number may be the only way to know this is a fake.

So until the datewheel get squared away and I can find a local watchsmith to install it..........i am looking for a PAM027 Power reserve with the proper movement so if you know the location of one, hook a brutha up with the knowledge!

That looks GREAT!! I love the Panerai GMT and Power Reserve 2892/2893 based watches. Yours looks really nice and the mods made a really big difference. The placement order of the hands is different on the GEN vs. your watch, but no one would ever spot that outside of the REP world. I'm trying to do the same thing with the 063 model. I'm also waiting on a datewheel and I'd like to swap the cyclops for the Chieftang 6.75mm cyclops. I figure I'll get some better mag.

Nice job!!!

I personally love the tuxedo dial. Too bad for the casing issues. If someone came up with this watch in a 1:1 casing, I'm sure to be a buyer.

Cheers!

It is the same 2893-2 movement as the genuine used.........the handstack order is EXACTLY the same on mine as the gen as it is the same movement. Look at the pics, am I worng or am I missunderstanding what you are speaking of?

http://bjsonline.com/watches/articles/0021.shtml

the 2893-2 is listed under the Panerai GMT for sale with the 2893-2 here for example

And what casing issues? This hasn't come up in any of my searches. If I understand it correctly, this particular version of the 29 (with the 2893-2) isn't even made anymore.

The case looks fine and the length of the GMT hand looks accurate also. Davidsen's case/handset is slightly different. I was told that the GEN GMT has the handset in the following order: hour, GMT, minute, seconds

And that the REP GMT has this order: GMT, hour, minute, seconds

But I could be wrong......

I don't know about all Panerai GMT. I am famous in my own circles for single minded determination in researching a specific subject and not paying much attention outside of that narrow subject. SO I could have missed something about other Pan GMT's or even this one for that matter.

In all the different pics I can find of the a,b, and c, Pan GMT's the hand stack was the same as it is on my Tux pam. Pam used a very "prettified" but almost totally off the shelf 2893-2 movement for these watches.

And to frank, I may be blind and wrong as hell. And I am always willign to change my mind if the corrected info presents itself.

The pics in the Timezone add have some GREAT side shots and to me the hand stack appears to have the GMT hand on the bottom.

One more crazy addition to the info on this. I always thought that the L SWISS MADE L was a late addition to the B series. And is it turns out it was just as possible to have an early B with this dial as a later version. There seems to be no rhyme or reason as when the dials were installed so much as to which watchmaker assembled the watch and what dial he had in his watch pile at that time.

How wierd is that?

Not weird at all. Panerai is famous (or should that be infamous?) for inconsistencies like this. Completely understandable growing pains for a "cottage industry" watch house, IMO. Since Richemont bought Panerai these variations have faded into the sunset for the most part.

Gorgeous watch, BTW. A true keeper. I should've kept the 2893-2 powered GMT I had once upon a time. I bought it for $200 2 years ago. D'oh!

Don't feel bad. I think have looked at all of the tux dial watches offered by every dealer and none of them had what I was looking for to base my rep off of.

They either had the wrong movment (and all the extranious crap that goes with that problem) or the dial was wrong, case was wrong dimensions, or like one specific dealers watch.......it looks GREAT but EVERYTHING is juuussttt a weeee bit off.

So it took me a good bit of time to pay attention to golfbums add long enough to realize this was the now extinct beast I was looking for.

I am very happy with the results so far.

And the strap is from Elliot, I bought it when he had them on daily special for $49! Now it is back to $109.

Thanks again Golfbum!

Ok, So I have a lineon a lello AND a finepics datewheel both. I think I should buy both and just use which ever works out better.

Any suggestions or knowledge as to which datewheel is better?

I'd opt for Lello's datewheel. I paid for a Finepics wheel quite some time ago and I'm still waiting for it :(
