Man, first time I saw a Panerai didn't know what all the fuzz was about, they are simple, bulky and ugly. Plus I hated the look of the crown guard (or whatever you call it)

Now I want one!!!!

Please help me choose one! I have chosen my dealer: Andrew. He has always step up and kept his word (to me at least).

But there are so many (and I want them all!). Still I gotta accept I'm quite ignorant when it comes to Panerais so I really need your help PLEASE

I was thinking about:

111G or H? what is the frigging difference?
http://www.ttwristwatch.com/index.php?main_page=product_info&products_id=693

or the 177h? http://www.ttwristwatch.com/index.php?main_page=product_info&products_id=1023

or which would you recommend? I am looking for the uPO of Panerais (almost perfect replica)

Yes I know sounds like "who's got the best sub?" question, but it is not I`m just asking which is the most accurate and mos beautiful Pam

Hey any help will be really appreciated guys (should've written this in the flame-free section)

There are lots of information on the forum if you do a search for the models you want, but here is a summary:

1. 111G Vs. 111H - in short

- G-series has Painted Sausage Dial & PANERAIPANERAIPANERAI engraved movement.
- H-series has Sandwich Dial (the number markers are layered) & Cote de geneve (smooth & Wavy patterned) movement.

2. 111 Vs. 177

- 111 has Stainless Steel case, caseback, crown guard, crown, etc... so it's SS watch
- 177 is all Titanium - so it's lighter.
- 111 & 177 share the same dial & movement

3. What do I prefer?

- It's a subject matter, but I like 111G or 177G series with sausage dial.
- What's more popular? 111H, and lately 177H has gained a lot of buzz and popularity (it seems)

4. Is there a perfect Panerai?

- Nope (as you guessed it ^^) It's a quite contrversal issue - regarding which model and which dealers' watches are most accurate - but in my opinion, Sausage dial with "L SWISS L" below 6 with Closed Caseback watches are the most accurate to date (from any dealer).

All Pam reps come with the following common flaws (except for a very few dealers' modded versions)

a. Recessed cannon pin (center pin that holds down the hands)
b. thin Crown (except for a few models, such as 036, etc.)
c. weak lume

There you go ;)

Great info Joe! I’ll just add (for the opposite perspective) that I really like a sandwich dial on a 111 or 177…something about the added depth. It’s really just a preference thing though, so the OP needs to figure out three things;

1. Painted or Sammy
2. SS or Ti
3. Fully Modded OTB or Dealer Special with some minor flaws

Figuring out the answers to those three questions is half the fun…GOOD LUCK!

Thanks Joe, really good info, really appreciate the help!

When you say closed caseback you mean the like for example a PAM005? Is the movement, (even if it is the swiss G series) that according to andrew is 98% correct, really that far off?

Thanks guys for all the help

well, first of all, if it's a closed caseback, noone will be seeing your movement ;) That's the beuaty of having a closed back PAM. One drawback is that not all models with closed caseback come with the correct closed back. Serial numbers are off on most models... if you want to be nit-picky about stuff like that.

Pam 005 - standard rep dial has flaws... the logo is slightly tilted to the left... the "arrow" of the logo does not line up with the E of "panErai" - it's dead giveaway in my opinion. but yeah, like 005, there are models that come with closed caseback. ANother set of examples would be 001, 002, 003, 004, 009, 061, etc.

However, all of these models come with sausage dials, and for most people, sausage dials are an acquired taste. sandwich dials are cleaner in looks and looks more expensive and fancy ^^ Sausage dials give it a vintage feel.

Research helps (I consider myself a noob in Panerai, who has done some research over the past few months) and have fun ^^

so ugly

I know this is gonna upset some people. By i think panerai are the ugliest watches ever. No creativity whatsoever. I have received a genuine panerai marina as a gift two years ago, wore it once or twice then last week gave it away to my cousin who is crazy about them. I think it is like those jeans with the crown on the ass all girls are crazy about called Rock and republic, I was reading they cost 9 dollars per pair and are sold at 300 dollars. You look at a panerai then you look at an audemars or a patek it is like comparing a hummer to a bentley.

Man that is exactly how I felt, bit then I started looking closely, first fell for a PVD PAM with rubber strap I saw, looked pretty cool because it was big and simple and black 8)

Then looked at the other ones and started liking them, it is an acquired taste, and yes they are sooo simple hence the elegance, it is like you have those houses that are full of furniture and very decorated and they might look good, but then you have those minimalistic super cool houses those are Panerai

Man I gotta go to sleep I, to late to get that philosophical!!!! [smilie=happy8.gif]

I for one hate Hummers, but you make a very good point. You wouldn’t want a PAM to be your only watch, and you wouldn’t want an AP / Patek to be your only watch…are you really gonna drive your Bentley in a blizzard, or a thunderstorm, or on the beach, or down shitty roads in the middle of nowhere? No, you’re gonna take it for an ego trip down Main St. on a sunny Sunday afternoon. If that experience is what you’re looking for in a watch, great, the APs and Pateks and UNs and IWC Portuguese are perfect, and they’re BEAUTIFUL pieces are art. If on the other hand you’re looking for that tough, beefy, rugged, who cares about a few nicks and scratches, historic, tuna can look, PAM wins hands down. In fact, I’d argue that PAMs (despite their simplicity) are exponentially MORE unique than their more refined counterparts. In the end of the day it’s a matter of whether you want to drive that slick little Bentley every day, rain or shine, or whether you want the fundamental reliability of a Hummer that can get you through any situation, anywhere, anytime…
