Could someone tell me the difference between 196 and 250?
Which one is the better rep?

I believe the gen 196 did use a Zenith movement and the 250 has a Panerai movement.
What are the big differences between the reps?

Both have 7750. 196 has numbers for hours. 250 has hour markers rather than numbers. 196 has a polished bezel versus brushed onthe 250. On the gens, 250 has a "historic"styled crownguard meaning it is bigger and the lever is centered in the crown guard. Rep 250 uses old style crownguard.

Personally, I find the 250 more purposeful and elegant. Just me ... I recognize the merits of the 196.

I came back to revisit this question after wondering about the same issues a few weeks back, after actually getting the 196.

They're incredibly similar but have different attitudes... The 196 is said to be more overstated and attention getting... The 250 more subdued and perhaps more elegant. It was a tough choice for me, esp. since 250 cases and dials are said to be modeled after the relatively recent 2006 models. Even the dealer that I bought from made his case for getting the 250 as the better watch. In the end I weighed various opinions on this board and went with the opinion held by some that the 196 while less accurate (and harder to pull off with the fact that it's discontinued) has a little more "pop" to it .

Of course these accuracy issues are all made moot by the fact that newer thin font datewheels and asian 7750 recessed date positions are dead giveaways. So unless you're lucky enough to have a 7753 Swiss with an old datewheel or can get one (I'd love one myself) these watches are never going to be superreps and will have to suffice as high end costume jewelry of sorts.

This may help:

If you are going 7753 route:

250:

7753
- Tachymetre spelling changed to tachymeter on the bezel and bezel should be brushed not polished. Dead giveaway.
- Crown guard was changed on the gen not on the rep. This is an issue for all 250's and 251's.
- Luminor on case back is correct (some have and some don't)

7750
- Bezel is correct in finish and spelling
- Still wrong crownguard
- Don't know if available in new "new" case which is pretty good. There may be new "new" cases but the last round I am familiar with had bezels which did not match up against the gen or the old case 7753's in terms of bezel height or "spread" on the case.

196:

7753
- Can be found in old case
- Bezel is spot on in terms of spelling and finish
- Major flaw on the dial is the 6 o'clock marker being too long and as a result too close to the subdial
- Ongoing debate whether it should have Luminor on the caseback. Some did and some didn't.
- Crownguard is correct

7750
- Same as above.

So in summary, if you are going for a 7753 I would always opt for old case 196. At a minimum misspelling on bezel and wrong finish is a dead giveaway. If going for 7750 than the choice is less clear. This ignores the more fundamental issue of which one you like better. In any case there will be a solution for the 7753 date font as per RWG.

Thanks kruzer-- nice details.

i've seen some gen 250s advertised on the bay or internet from reputable dealers with polished or brushed bezels.

The polished bezels say Tachymetre
the brushed bezels say Tachymeter

These correspond well with the various models offered by Andrew / Joshua / Ruby / etc...

Would you consider the possibility of an intramodel change?

I finally ended up getting the 250 from Ruby. I did not wanted to spend around 700 USD for a 7753 but I wanted to have the new Asian with the 28800 bph. The 196 is only available with the older Asian movement.

The watch works fine, the lume is not bad for a rep, chronos work just fine, no reset problems at all.

The date font is acceptable, I beleive it was a good deal for 200 USD.

The watch has a long history, it got stuck in customs, I manage to get it out but when it arrived, the steem was broken and the face of the watch moved ( 12h position was at 11h) I believe it was done fom the customs guys on purpose. because the had to deliver the watch to me. Anyhow, I sent it back to Ruby via normal airmail and Ruby replaced the watch. It arrived last week....after 10 weeks. Ruby send it also via normal mail and this time it did not even see customs, but shipping was 2.5 weeks. I almost gave up on the watch.....

When I am in Bangkok this November I will see if I get a 193 with 7753....It is a lot of money for a fake and I would like to have it in my hand before I pay.
