I don't think either of those are correct. The one in the second link looks like it *might* be the case/caseback from the 036 (notice the engravings on the case itself, near the lugs). I'm certain the blank caseback is incorrect, I'm guessing the 2nd caseback is also incorrect, as there is no series/serial number engraving. I could be wrong, though.

Interesting since I'm working (well Vacuum is) on a 172. The 172 was a Special Edition from 2003 which would make it an F series watch and therefore an F series caseback.

In the book, the watch is shown with a plain caseback. But I could swear that I've seen the watch for sale (GEN) with an F series Titanium caseback, not a Tantalium. And even the book specifies that the caseback is Titanium.

If you look here:

hxxp://www.panerai.com/s_special_editio ... tegoria=48

The caseback shown is once again unmarked. So I would think that an F series caseback or an unmarked Ti caseback would be correct.

Also, the movement should be the F series dagger/swan neck. I won't get into all of the details there, but I think the Asian 6497-2 version of this LOOKs the most correct. Polished and beveled wheels, nice finish and a good movement after servicing.

I just found this picture in my archives for the 172. I think it's a Ti caseback marked with Tantalium.

I've done some research and the movement is just like the picture above.

The 36 has a much older Vendome movement.

Wow. That dial looks really good, DSN. Is the case Titanium, or is it brushed SS with your new titanium look ION coating, too?

Davidsen, that watch looks great. I think the Tantalium looks darker though than the plated SS. My case has oxidized Ti which looks nice. It's like a dark grey. Also, even though I see unmarked casebacks on the Panerai website and in the books, every 172 that I've seen has had the caseback (Ti engraved with Tantalium) I posted the picture of.

Keep up the GREAT work. Very nice!!

Great work once again DSN !

Since it's still in a prototype stage, lets try making it look even better if we can :)

- the caseback comes with full engraving like the photo that 'skcheng' posted shows. The photo on Panerai web site and catalogues shows the 'sanitized' prototype (once again :))

- hour and minute hands should be of the same width, just like standard Luminor Marina and Base hands. The hour hand on the prototype is slightly thicker.

Other bits are just great, that Ion plating will definitely add the subdued blue metal color of the real Tantalium.

cheers,
babola

Also, I like the newer H on series CG with the centered lever, but the 172 should have the CG with the offset lever. It's a minor detail. I think the 172 had a Ti crown too. At least from the pictures I've seen. I could be wrong.......

The newer Swiss/Asian 6497-1 looks great. But it never escapes me that all of the GEN Panerai have 6497-2 movements with the flared spokes on the balance wheel.

Once again, just little tidbit details that I seem to dwell over lately

Here is the photo of the front and gack of gen that I got them from eBay sometime back.

Would love to see the improve of Davidsen font index especially number 6 before he releases this model.

The back of this actual available on market has engraved back.

For the case and the back, since Davidsen already has Ti case, which one will be better between using Ti case or have Tantalum look-alike plating. In term of wt, I used to see one of the member on RWI post that he mentioined the gen 172 Tantalum is quite heavy. But if used Ti with oxidized, it will be more durable than plating, I guess.

If anyone has the gen 172 here please give more information to help out Davidsen before he release this model.

Thanks.
