Hi guys,

Still trying to work out which should be my first Panerai and although I love the PAM1351 (brown dial, brown strap) I think I should probably play it safe with colour choice for my first. This has led me to the PAM1312 (simple black).

It seems that there are three versions for this model (here are the three at PT):
  • ZF (November 2016) - most expensive and the one I have found most information on here but also the oldest (albeit only by a little)
  • V6F (November 2016) - cheapest and has 23j movement
  • V6F (February 2017) - newest, based on 7750 but I can't find much information about this
So ZF or the newer V6F?

All thoughts welcome!

Technically there is no difference between the ZF and V6F versions of the PAM1312, aside from the color of the jewels on the movement, which sogo (I wonder where he is, he's been absent from the forums) pointed out that the ZF version, with the more "gen-like" color of the jewels was said to have used markers to color the jewels darker and could easily be removed using a cotton swab dabbed in some solvent like acetone. Now under intense heat I am not sure how the ink from the markers will react. That is my only concern on the ZF version. But otherwise, they are really the same..

craiguk Did you order a PAM1312? If so, which one, do you have pictures and are you satisfied? I thought about going for a 1392 but it's thicker then gen therefore I want to go for a 1312. The last "problem" is that I don't know if 44mm is too big...

mysterio What movement would you suggest to go with?

It depends. You buy an A7750 based movement, it's more expensive initially, but if you need to get it repaired, it will be cheaper as parts for this are available. If you choose the A23J, it's cheaper but if it needs repair, parts are hard to come by so you'll need to pay for an entire movement. Reliability wise, these are rep movements although none of my mostly A7750-based reps need servicing after more than a year of ownership (some of them more than 5 years).

Is it necessary to have the watch serviced immediately after purchase? Have read here in the forum, that it is highly recommended for some movements.

Regarding the repair of the A7750: Is it usually repaired with original parts from an ETA7750 or is there a market for the Asian movement parts?
On the other hand: Can you use an ETA7750 and put the decoration on it, if you buy it very cheap?

Depends on the mvt,... if you look at Rollies with an SA 3135 there are many stories about this mvt being very badly made. So a lot suggest to have this mvt serviced right away when receiving it.
I have A7750's and a few 21J(now A2813 or 23J) for more then 10 years, most still running good.
It's what Mysterio said, the 23J mvt is a cheaper mvt so spareparts are not economically produced hence you need to replace the mvt when broken. A7750, 2826 and 2824 are more reliable and easy to get parts for.

The ZF and V6 look very similar and overall great quality. From pics I've been able to find, the V6 has a more genuine center pin that holds the hands. The pin on the ZF looks slightly oversized. However, the lume on the V6 doesn't look as gen? Can't tell because I am solely relying on limited pics and feedback available on V6.
