Hi guys,
My mother asked me to pick up a watch for my brother in law for Christmas. Stupidly I picked it up off aliexpress and not from one of the trusted sellers. It arrived and she sent me a photo and it looked pretty good. Brothrr was very happy with it. However the issue is it now stops randomly. It will run for a while and then stop despite having plenty of charge. If he gives it a good shake it comes back to life. Ive told him to give it a slap into his palm and also to try and check the balance wheel for rubbish. Other than that Ive no idea. I expect there would be no comebwck with the seller. Am i best off just trying to buy a 6497 and slot that in- how tough would that be? Feel a bit sorry for him as he was made up with it and has had many compliments.
Any pointers greatly appreciated.

Hands touching, balance / hairspring issues and mainspring issues make up the vast majority of stopping. Look at the hands with a loupe and make sure they are not touching each other, the dial, etc. Look at the balance and make sure the balance and hairspring aren't dirty, the spring isn't stuck to itself, and that the spring is parallel to the balance. The mainspring is a bit more difficult to figure out, you'll have to take it apart to do so. I see this a lot ore often than I did in the past; I have replaced 4 barrels this year alone. It is easiest just to swap in a complete barrel to see if it solves the problem. Diagnosing a barrel / mainspring issue isn't the easiest thing to do and they are cheap enough to just replace.

I'd send it to be serviced. Clean, lube and regulate while inspecting and he will get back a stable, long running piece.

Thanks for the reply. Ive decided to get stuck in, buy my own tools and learn something. Ive ordered another 6497 movement (again with swanneck). will swop this one out and use the (currently) defective movement in my own PAM build, solving the problem first. Dont know how it will look yet. California dial maybe. PVD case. Or maybe a Radiomir. I suppose there is a certain amount of pride in a watch you have assembled yourself.

My guess is the second hand is rubbing within the dial hole. Pop out the dial/movt assy. Pop the stem back in, wind it, and nudge the second hand with a toothpick and see. If so, the dial is probably a hair off center, causing the rub. Speaking from experience...

Hello, well yesterday I came to remove the movement for a straight swap 6497
Removed stem them hands and dial. Came to remove the stem from the replacement 6497 & the release screw seems to be so tight that it doesnt unscrew but acts like a 'switch to pop out the stem/crown. Anyone seen this before?
Apologies for the blurry factor...

https://db.tt/aAhnQiD8 Ive contacted the seller...

Also, if you remember the original issue was it stopping running. So ive had the original movement out and just left it running overnight. Its still purring away so it could be that its the second hand in dial hole.
