I thought about posting this i flame-free...but I can take the heat (that will come)... Thought i would get the best answers under this heading.

I never thought about buying a PAM prior to this forum...but what can I say, you guys are converting me. My question is this... is there any PAM out there that is OK out of the box, or do I need to buy one and ship it all over the world so I can enjoy it in, oh, 6 months... There are some great looking PAMS here, would like to represent as well...

This one is pretty much dead-on as soon as you get it home:

That's the thing about Pams - none of them are ever good enough and people spend years and hundreds of dollars "improving" them.
As far as "out of the box", Davidsen tends to have some of the nicer ones. But no - they are all flawed to one degree or another (as are all reps).
Just buy one and enjoy it for what it is - a 90% representation of a much more expensive watch. Or pay more and get one that is 95%. But that last 4+% will cost you DEARLY!

Find one you like and enjoy it! You can always upgrade it over time if you so choose. The 111H is a great one to start with. If you like a diver style PAM, check out Davidsen's Submersibles. Good luck in the search.

Thanks for the quick replies. Maybe I'll just hang around and wait for a good one to be posted on the member sales... :pam:

as a noob myself, i was recommended to start out with a pam111h, which i got for 140, shipped from replicamake. i'm still waiting for its arrival, but have been planning on doing basic mods to test the waters for this new hobby.

The following will include removing the AR, cannon pinion and hour wheel replacement to an H3 CP, tightening the crown guard, and finally flattening the nipple part of the crown guard pin.

all of this will cost me close to $50, which I think isn't that bad to have it look pretty close to gen.

You'll have to let me know how it goes... just did the same as you above through Lay @ Repmake.

In my experience, getting as close to GEN as possible is all up to you. I have some reps with no mods and I love them. My favorite is my PAM187 from puretimewatch.com. The lume isn't great and the date wheel is off but on my wrist, I love it. You will never get a rep with good lume unless you upgrade it. That I'm fine with. Even with the flaws, I've had conversations about watches with GEN owners and we looked at each others watch, commented about them, and had a great conversation. In every case the other guy walked away with some PAM knowledge from me. I have yet to meet an owner of any GEN who knew as much as I (the people here) about the watches. And for that matter no one has ever tried to 'call me out'. The comments I get most are "what is that" "love the watch" and "wow" I have a lot of straps which I switch up often. That is the level of customizing I like. Here is the 187.

Thanks and great advice. Not looking to "fool" anybody, and would never buy a rep that I couldn't purchase as a gen... Just want something that doesn't look like I am trying too hard... The problem with gens is you buy one or two and you have A LOT invested, with reps you can buy four or five and mix it a bit...

I feel the same. I can have 10 watches for less than most of the GENs I like. Especially when I look at the reality of spending $6k plus on a watch I am happier right now with the money in the bank. Even the 187 I love is a bit ridiculous, the retail is over $16,000 if you can find it. I really love that most people have no idea what it is. As much as I've learned about watches I'm always looking to see what people are wearing and I have to say that in at least the past 2 years I've seen maybe 10 people wearing Panerai.
