Can any of the Panerai experts out there help me. I have been trawling the net trying to get a picture of the movement of a gen Pam 217.
The Davidsen "Ultimate" 217 has a movement with Cote de Geneves engraving which I think is also known as the "wavy bridge" movement.
Genuine PAM 127 or 1950 watches have the movement with multiple PANERAIPANERAI engraving and I think that both of these watches are
very similar (except for the left / right issue) and are from the same time period so I am a bit confused. Can someone post a picture of the
movement of a genuine 217. or at least point me in the right direction.

There is no 'ultimate' 217 in the same sense as the Omega PO. The movement is completely wrong in appearence on so many levels. Even my girlfriend, who knows as much about watches as I do about shoes saw that the OFFICINE PANERAI on the back was upside down.

Still a great watch though.

Here the back of a genuine one.

217 CDG

-

The 217 should have CDG bridges - as shown above - and a dagger swan's neck reg. Here's mine - a good one but the reg needle's is a bit thin:

Also, I think the movement text around the edge should be blue.

I love my 217!

I like mine too :D
Concerning the text upside down, i am not really sure it's correct. I remember a post talking about it ...

I just purchased the 217 Destro version from Davidsen. I can't wait to receive it. Can anyone confirm the size strap I would need for this watch? Thanks.

You will need a 26mm strap. It's the same size as the fiddy. Now length and thickness is up to your wrist size and preference.

Thanks! I plan to choose a strap from HK Tan, unless someone on this forum tells me why I should not. Thanks again!

All 217 reps fail at the obvious. The GEN has gone to the effort on the DESTRO watch to engrave OFFICINE PANERAI in the movement bridge 180D from all other PANERI H series Cote de Geneve centre bridge pieces.

However, this is the kind of flaw that requires taking the watch off that showing it as wrong, as most people would never notice this unless they knew and purposely looked for it. The easiest way to spot it would be a side-by-side comparison with a GEN. To someone who knew their GEN movements, the finish of the reps would tell even before noting where the crown is in relationship to the text on the bridge. It's error would simply confirm their suspicions if they had them.

Most rep perfection is better done on the front of a watch and the 217 is a convincing model with a well proportioned dial. It takes 3 simple mods to bring it up to wow level.
1) lume redial
2) cannon recess fix
3) sapphire crystal swap.
The DSN version comes with those mods, so the next step is what is the best strap to make it really pop? Mario Paci? GeF? LaSpezia? I think my new MP favourite is the XIII -- that would set the tone.

Amen ;-)

 So I looked on the MP website as I am now searching for a strap for my PAM 217 (my first PAM). The MP XIII is priced at $199.00. Yikes! In your honest opinion, is it really worth spending that much money on a strap? What is your best recommendations for straps at about half the price?

I took your advice! I purchased the Mario Paci XIII "3646" in Noce Moscata with a MP sewn in buckle. Regularly priced at $199.00, but I got a 40% discount. Sweet deal.

I will post pictures of my new Pam 217 Destro with my new MP strap, when they both arrive. Now the waiting begins...
