PAM 177 Noob vs 061D H-Maker

I have finally had my 061 returned, serviced following a stopped movement, I now have had the opportunity to have both of these Ti watches side by side. You'll have to excuse the very poor iphone pictures, I am looking for a decent macro lens, so bear with me.

Well before I venture in to a few pictures and thoughts, the obvious differences are the case which is marginally different in shape around the lugs (ALE has done a fantastic review so no point in me highlighting) the colour of the Ti. The noob is more 'stainless' in look with a finer finish and brighter look. I did notice a gen 177 that I tried on looked brighter than my 061 a while back. The CG have the noted differences.

I like the look of both watches and find the finish of the H-Maker marginally more appealing, like the slightly matter finish and the way the reduced brightness does not highlight the uneven polishing on the Noob, as the light catches the CG around the pin for example you can see this has a 'flap wheel' look to the finish which to my eyes looks less gen. I will hand flatten and refinish the noob at some point as this does jarr from time to time.

Overall I like both in different ways, I really like the sandwich dial and love the tobacco colouring of the 061. I wonder if Panerai will ever bring out a tobacco sandwhich dial ?!

The lume, sorry no shots to compare is interesting, the noob is stronger and greener the H-Maker more than strong enough IMO and if I was guessing seems more like factory watches, but I believe this isnt the case and I don't have a gen pam to compare. A coiple of pictures with both watches swapped in position, without doing this the light will favour one in look over the other. I am looking at the watch overall and particularly the crystal here

You can guess which is which, for those who can't left in pic 1 is the 061, regarding the crystal they are IMO very similar, however the H-Maker does have the slight edge in reducing reflection and having a slightly more crystal appearance from the side, not as good a gen as I noticed a difference between a gen 177 and my 061 rep. This surprised me as I was expecting the noob to win here. But to my eyes the position of the watch has more influence than the apparent slight edge from the H-Maker

This time the 061D is on the right in the fist Pic, then left on the second, easy to see how pictures can be misleading and why having in hand makes the world of difference.

The dial visibility is better on the 061 as the sausage dial is more forgiving of angle and whilst the loom is stronger on the Noob the slightly lighter colouring of the 061 marking and the lack of sandwich sheltering provides a slightly brighter, cleaner look to the face

Another couple of pictures trying to show the finish of the faces. The noob 177 does have a slight sheen to the dial which is distinctly more matt on the 061, I am unsure which is more accurate bit do prefer the more matt 061 dial face. I have started another thread exploring the sheen on the NoobN 177 http://forum.replica-watch.info/vb/showthread.php/panerai-dial-sheen-152454

I have a number of straps and do find the subtle difference of the tobacco dial favours different straps, at present I am enjoying owning both.

I was expecting to prefer the 177 Noob over the H-Maker 061, but at this point I don't and if I accept the accuracy differences (when will I ever see a gen 061 to compare ?!) I find nothing lacking with the H-Maker 061d

My next step will be to refinish the Noob (losing the 'flap wheel' polish look) and file the small 'ding' on the CG, which you can see in the pictures. I will also look at how I might fit a more original CG to the 061d.

I do wonder if KW might release an 061 copy which would be very interesting :D:

Very nice.

Its important to remember that you are comparing gens from two different time periods in the evolution on Panerai Luminor Ti case sets and ials etc.

Having owned a 116d gen up until last year, I can assure you that the cg fit and finish and cg pin depth and position is nothing like a modern noob rep or modern gen 177 etc

Both of your pieces are really great, I may have to get 61d rep soon! The uncharged lume on my 116d often looked more green than all of the current h and n factory reps.

I cannot live with an open case back rep after the gen 116.

As you rightly say, who will ever know, as what are the odds of actually bumping into a gen 61d or other?

Thanks for the review.

Interesting, any example pictures taken with the macro ?

I don't have it with me to take a watch shot, but here's a comparison I took of my business card awhile back.

First one is iPhone only, zoomed out to show the entire image:

Next is portion of that same photo at 100%:

Last is the macro @ 100% -- it's a remarkable lens for $80:
