Hey guys,

a friend of mine bought last year a PAM 1392 from ZF, for those who don't know it's a 42mm luminor 1950 with small seconds and date complication. It sports an a7750 without the chrono module.

Today, after powering down in his watchbox for the last two days, it won't start again: handwind doesn't work and if you shake it around it will start again for a few seconds but immediately die again afterwards.

Any idea what could be the cause and if there's anything which could be done without bringing it to a watchmaker?

As the rep itself costs around 300 Eur, and a full service might go for around 150 Eur, I'm not sure if it would make more sense to just buy a new one...

Hard to say... perhaps just dirt locking up the movement. Or.... I had a strange problem on one of my ZF that the dial (not set on the movement straight) was causing friction on the canon pinion, thus stopping the movement at the same second every minute... does it stop at the same second every time?

I don't believe it could be a misaligned dial as it has worked properly, keeping good time, for over one year and just stopped working today. Plus it looks pretty clean through the case-back, but of course it could always be that a particle of dirt just got dislodged from where it was and fell in the wrong place...

My watch was working fine for a few months, and then I suppose I bumped my wrist or something similar (definitely never dropped the watch or anything similar), but one day it simply stopped working. Winding it would actually advance the time, but it would stop around the same place every minute. I opened the watch, and the screws that held the movement to the case were slightly loose. So somehow the movement shifted relative to the dial, and the cannon pinion was rubbing against the dial.... bizarre!

This could also be the case with the second hand...

Once I centered the dial, the watch came back to life.

Hmmm yeah, pretty weird situation. I'll try to open it up and see if I can spot anything which is visibly out of place or loose

could be a number of things, impossible to tell without servicing, I personally would get it serviced and then at least you know your good to go with it again for a fair while, plus you can get the WR check done at the same time so you know you will be able to get it wet or not
