Hi!
Probably a stupid question and I tried to find an answer before posting this. I can hear the tick tack sound from the movement from like around 30-50 cms from my ears. Is that normal? I have another rep that I cant hear the movement on until I put my ear on the watch.

Hi! Thank you! Are all Pam rep’s this ”noisy” or are some of them more quite?

No, only hand wind 6497 models are the specificity of this big movt. GEN is the same. Models based on clone P.9000, 7750/7753, ST2555 are quieter.

The Pam360 that I bought earlier has the same 6497 movement but are a noticable quiter. It has been serviced though. Which I understand might do some difference?

I would say that the difference is something like(distance from my ear):
Pam111 at a 40 cm distance equal Pam360 at a 30 cm distance.
Or Pam111 at a 30 cm distance equal Pam360 at a 20 cm distance.

All watches will produce sound from its movement, depending on the movement, some may be louder than others but its normal. Timegraphers are used to listen to the ticking, or sound, of your watch. It measures the beat rate, amplitude, and beat error of your watch to obtain information about your movement.

Get a quartz - you'll not hear a whisper from it.

A quartz!!??!? Never! Hahaha

I think this one is just a little extra loud. Could even hear it when I put butter on my sandwich this morning, standing up close to the table. So its noticable like 70 cm’s away.

But Im happy with it! Amazing watch!

I also wanted to note that older 6497-1s with a low beat are usually noticeably louder.

Otherwise, I agree that the volume is not a direct indicator of a malfunction.

On my own behalf, I will add that I didn’t have anything against this sound, but on the contrary ... It seems that it partially contains some magic of a mechanical watch.

Its good that hear that it shouldnt have anything todo with some kind of mechanical problem!

I can hear the sound from my Pam360 but its just a lot lower. Which should have the same movement if Im not totally mistaken. I have no problem with hearing the sound from that one.

I have also read in different chats that a service after a watch just came from a factory can reduce the sound. If turns out that I think its to loud in the end I might try out that. For now Im fine and I think I got great answers here to explain things.

I have noticed that with the myriad of 6497 watches I have now. Some are incredibly loud which I thought might be a good thing because it means the beat is strong. I’m thinking of diving into learning to service a 6497, what better moment to start with right?

Sounds like great plan to learn how to service a 6497. Let me know if that changes the loudness of the movement!
