PAM048

Walked by an AD today and I saw the pam048. I fell in love with it.
I immedialty checked with the td's and Narikaa can get the MBK version.

This is not really cheap, so does anyone have any feedback on the MBK pam048?

Thanks!

40mm Panerai are not really popular I guess. Plus since no other TD's can get them they are going to be pretty rare.

+1, and not very accurate either, just don't expect noob/h factory quality on these ones. Too bad, market would welcome these ones.

They are not? Thought that with a DW mod you had a pretty nice rep.

basically, with the 048, u can expect to do the following:-

1) DW change. (pretty much a definite mod&biggest tell)
2) Lume redone. (even if u'r not a lume freak, the colour of the lume uncharged is quite a tell)
3) CG pin flatten. (definitely an issue if u get the rounded CG pin, as i've seen a mix of rounded&flushed pins on the 048)
4) CG profile. (profile of the CG may be too thin as compared to GEN, but again, have seen a mix of some with acceptable thickness.)
5) Canon Pinion mod. (most reps from that era have a recessed canon pinion, thus u'd need to mod it to have it sit flushed with the hands)
6) Dial Matte-d. (depending on the serial, i believe some GENs have matte dials or gloss dials, but this i cant comfirm)

with the above mentioned work, u might as well consider slapping a swiss movement into it to increase reliability. so even if u'r not too nitpicky, items 1,2,3&5 are pretty much needed to at least get it to look like the GEN but if u'r gona be doing so much, might as well go all the way without going franken.

u'r looking to easily fork out about the same amount as the watch to begin with. &double the amount to go all the way, again w/o going franken.

i've been waiting 2yrs for a acceptable attempt on the 048, spoken to dealers&manufacturers, none would consider taking on the project.

so yea.

Eh, I feel like the above posters are giving the MBK 048 pretty short shrift. Yes, visually it's not quite up to par with what we expect from the H/N factories, but they're very nice watches regardless.

The only real flaws to speak of, in my opinion, are the dial (indices need to be thicker), datewheel (can be replaced), and lack of AR and superlume (also fixable, if you want though earlier 048s were not AR'd, as I understand it). The biggest problem is the lack of available replacement dials, but even out of the box they're very nice watches with great wrist presence.

Also worth mentioning is the outstanding quality of the milled SS cases. The fit and finish on these cases is better than what I've seen from the H and N factories, the brushing and edges and everything is really superb. The crystals, while not ARd, are also of extremely high quality.

My wife wears one, and on the wrist it's pretty stunning. If I could get a decent rubber strap for one (the gens run around 170 and there are no good rep rubber straps for them) I would probably wear it more often.

ok, 1st of all, my earlier post was based on my own findings&feelings. basically cux we've lost a locally available watchsmith&modder, thus, many here have not considered even getting it as it'll be too much shipping around to get the above mentioned done&some here arent willing to take that risk.

it wasnt meant to generalize the watch. the REP itself is stunning on its own, it was considered a work of art&represented hope during its launched that much better quality was on its way, back then. honestly, i feel the 048 is being nitpicked cux the quality of the 44mm variants have been so wonderfully made, the thought of taking apart the watch&putting it thru all that modding would turn many off.

i, personally, have decided to make a trip to BKK&head to MBK soon to pick one up myself&do a lil DIY with the DW. the rest, i can pretty much live with, besides, lume doesnt excite my girl as much as it excites me :D

i'd say, jump on any 048s u see either by dealers or members, i just keep missing them so thus e trip to MBK.

Here are some shots of my MBK 48, modded with a Leo DW and a gen dial. Really like this watch, can highly recommend it!

The gen dial is killer, but good luck finding one.

Quite true unfortunately. However, a PAM49 dial did show up at the bay a while back and ended at $79 :) The old EL '06 is supposed to be the best rep dial made (equally hard to find), but as far as I can see the stock rep dials available today aren't really THAT bad either...
