Pam 029 problem?

I have the Pam 029 from PT. I have had it for about a month and it works perfect. I just noticed this morning that the am/pm hand is off? Basically the hand is currently about 3 hrs behind. It switches the date at 3:20 or so, instead of midnight (it used to switch the date right at midnight)? It still keeps great time, i just don't know what happened? I also noticed at the same time that the two screws that hold the crown guard were loose. I tightened them...could this have anything to do with it?

Thanks for any advice

It has nothing to do with the CG.

Ummm... I'm not sure what you mean by the am/pm hand... are you talking about the hour hand?

I think you mean the GMT hand, if thats the case then it is somewhat normal that it doesnt follow properly. These movements are modified to act as a GMT movement, but they dont always function properly.

I had the same issue with a GMT master, sometimes the gmt hand was always spot on to the time i set it at and other times it would just advance whenever it felt like it..

OK

BTW I am talking about the 24h hand

OK, so I guess it isn't really broken, but just part of an imperfect rep?

Bear in mind that the GMT hand goes around the dial only once a day, instead of the normal two times that the hour hand does. So even if both hands were set at the same time (say +1UTC) the date would switch over when the hour hand is at midnight and the GMT hand is at 6.

In regards to the GMT hand lagging/slipping, it tends to happen with these modified movements. The extra gears added for the GMT function sometimes do not engage correctly, thankfully there is a quite simple fix.

Firstly is this the 21j or the Asian clone ETA? I don't know if this will work on the 21j but it does on the ETA. This is a really easy fix to get it back working again. It's not permanent but it will work most times. Adjust the GMT hand to where you want it, relative to your hour hand. Then set your time and scroll through a day or so. Just turn the crown and advance the time for 24 hours. It will get the gears back in sync and you should see the GMT hand working perfectly while you scroll through your time. Whenever mine would slip out of sync that little trick would get it back working again.

It happened to me today. Just tried your advice and it worked great.

Update an old thread! My 029 has suddenly started to stop at 12 midnight!

The seconds keep running and the minute get's to about 12.05am, but the hour and gmt stick at 12.

All it takes is me to forward onto the correct time every morning, but it's a little annoying! Any clues?

I have been leaving it face down with its rubber protector on - could that cause the hands to stick [gravity as it's normally worn facing up.............]?

If it's happening at the same time then it could be that the hands are touching each other. gmt touching hour maybe

Left it facing up last night and it didn't happen! So assume when face down the hands must be moving slightly, enough to rub at 12am?

I imagine thats it mate, hands touching when face down. very strange.

You have a few options.

1, live with the slightly loose hands. could be a problem if the watch gets knocked as the hands could come off and scratch the dial.
2, get a modder to sort the issue out. wont cost much but the wait might be a pain in the neck
3, be brave and get the right tools and try fixing it yourself. fairly easy if you have the right tools, a steady hand and patience.

Tools you will need for a diy job are. watchmakers screwdrivers, sticky ball or roll of duct tape, hand remover there are two types-plunger and presto i think, hand setter tool, tweezers preferably plastic, something to protect the dial from scratches and something to protect the hands (i use a piece of plastic from a little baggy over the top of the hands), a dust blower.

Remove cg, remove cb, set watch to 12 midday, unscrew movement holder screws put them somewhere safe, press stem release button with screwdriver to release crown and stem DO NOT PRESS TOO HARD or you might mess the keyless up, put a piece of paper or card on the back of watch then turn upside down carefully to remove mvt and dial.
place plastic over the hands remove hands with hand remover then use either tweezers to hold the hands when reinstalling (i use a small piece of masking tape on the tip of the hand it's much easier than tweezers) press hands on flat and straight with hand presser, blow any dust off dial then re-install mvt and dial blow any dust from the back, replace crown and stem carefully while depressing stem release button and moving/turning the crown back and forwards lightly until its in, replace mvt holder tabs and screws, replace cb replace cg. Job done!

Or just send to a modder if it seems a little too much lol.

Cheers for the low down mate! I am a clutz with anything DIY related, so will leave it for now and send to a modded at some point!
