Guys,

I recently picked up a 1950 from a friend of mine. It was a gift as a thanks for some work I've done for him in the past (wasn't expecting anything, he just gave me the watch and said thank you).

He told me he's had it laying around for some time and had forgotten about it. Apparently it was damaged at some point and repaired but I don't know much more aside from this (and these are all maybes based on what he thought he remembered about it):

1. It was missing the crown guard screws which I ordered and installed.
2. The crystal has definitely been replaced. Wondering how it looks compared to gen. Thinking about trying to source a nicer one maybe if the distortion isn't correct.
3. One of the smaller plate things (very bottom on the back just right of the big gear, has "panerai" stamped in it in a repeating pattern, not sure the name of this piece) was replaced because the original couldn't be refinished properly.
4. The case back is real but the case itself may have either been refinished or replaced
5. Face is genuine
6. Movement is genuine. Has a real nice, soft click when it winds
7. It was relumed at some point

Forgive the last two pictures. I didn't want to lay it down on the crystal and that blue microfiber was the first soft thing I could find.

It came with a beautiful Saxon Verreno tan strap on it but I wear a lot of black so I ordered this dark olive strap from panatime and installed it.

Thoughts?

I should have also asked how it would affect having it serviced if it does indeed have some aftermarket parts on it. Assuming Panerai wouldn't touch it at that point? Maybe a local jeweler would though if the movement is authentic?

I believe it's an ETA 6497. Some of the trusted watchmakers here might service this piece. I think it's one of the easier movements to work on. Just a thought. Also, beautiful piece.

No Pam expert but on cheaper reps, the engravings are just engraved stickers while yours seems to have a true engraving. But I can tell for sure that the 6497 is very service friendly - almost easy to do.

The movement looks like a Marlin modded noob to my eye. There are a few aspects of the gen OPXI finishing that cannot be achieved with the asian parts.
What are the giveaways? I was comparing it to photos of a gen and I can't find any differences.

From looking at your pictures more carefully I concur with @Woundup that this is a modded rep probably by Marlin
Is Marlin a person? Member? I'd love to send it to someone for a service and also to learn more about it (which parts if any are gen, which movement it actually is, etc...)

Just did a deep dive on some of his older posts. Sounds like his modded 127's are pretty highly regarded (and becoming harder and harder to find). Looking at some of the photos he's posted on various threads I think you and woundup are correct. Looks very much like a Marlin.

So it's not what I initially thought it was, but still an incredibly beautiful modded rep with a cool history.

I hope Marlin replies. I'd love to learn more about it.

Good on you for taking the time to do some research and learn about your watch - most are lazy & will just post and wait to be spoon fed.

Your friend certainly didn't just toss you a shitter... The dial and hands 'could' be gen - but still difficult to tell for sure without macro pics of the LP printing. If it is a franken/Marlin then it's worth around $3k or more IMO as gen 127 parts are impossible to find. Marlin's modded Panerai are hard to come by these days as most have become pieces of nice collections. Don't hold your breath for Marlin to respond or reply - not sure how much he pays attention to rep watches these days.

Regarding servicing - as mentioned above there are many trusted resources here who could do the required work blindfolded. I would recommend finding one in your own country to eliminate customs risks.

Enjoy your fiddy!

Thanks! I tried to get a decent macro with my Canon 24-105. It's all I have with me at the moment. Is this helpful?
