Given the general lack of discussion of Speedmasters on this forum, I thought I’d write some brief thoughts on the recently released Omega Speedmaster Moonwatch Co-axial v2 from OMF (referred to as “Speedmaster Co-axial” in this post).

Note: I was briefly considering selling this watch, which is why a number of the photos are tagged. That lasted about a day before sellers regret took hold and I came to my senses and withdrew the sale. This watch is NOT for sale.

This watch is a replica of the 44.25mm Speedmaster Co-axial chronograph hat was released by Omega in 2011. As you can see, instead of the traditional tri-compax sub-dial layout, the Speedmaster Co-axial has a bi-compax layout with the date at 6 o’clock.

The main differences I’ve noticed between this watch and the genuine version (Caveat: I don’t have the best attention to detail):
  • The indices on this watch are applied while the indices on the genuine watch are painted on the dial. To me, this is the main fault of this watch, though it would probably only be picked up by the very eagle eyed Speedmaster enthusiasts.
  • The replica’s has a thickness of 19mm while the genuine has a thickness of 16.5mm. That said, I’ve tried the genuine watch a number of times, and unless I had them side by side, I wouldn’t be able to tell the difference in thickness on the wrist.
The main things I like about the watch:
  • It’s a Speedmaster. I’ve always wanted one and it’s a very handsome watch.
  • The boxy sapphire crystal on the front and back is incredible to look it. It gives both the dial and the movement an amazing 3D effect and they really pop.
  • The shape of the lugs and their bevelled edges are very satisfying
  • The deployant clasp uses a minderless system, so excess strap length is tucked away underneath the strap.
The main things I dislike about the watch:
  • The crown guards make it very hard to manually wind this watch (especially compared to something without crown guards, like the IWC Pilot Chronograph).
  • The release on the deployant clasp does not feel as solid as some other reps I’ve owned (for example the clasps on the JJF Hublot Classic Fusion 42mm or Noob Rolex watches).
  • With the default black alligator pattern strap, it is a bit too formal for everyday wear.
This watch is no super rep, but overall, I very much enjoy it and I’m now eagerly awaiting a brown corner-stitched leather strap from Jacob Straps to complete the look!
