Oh Crap! - Hardcore Pawn - Rep Scammer on National TV

Did anyone see tonight's episode where Les gets scammed $5K on a rep AP Royal Oak? The minute the guy walked in and didn't know how to pronounce it correctly I knew where this was going...
Not what our hobby needs...exposure of rep quality so high that it can fool a 30+ year pawnbroker - "That was absolutely the best counterfeit watch I've ever seen in my life!"

EDIT: This is the watch in question. At the end of the show, the guy goes back to store later to sell a rep Rolex, they confront him about the scam and then he swears he was scammed himself.

It's the "watch out" episode: http://www.trutv.com/trutv2go/index.html#hpt=sphcp_r2&!/57608/967146

These guys have a broad knowledge of a plethora of goods. I doubt he sees many high end watches come into that shop. He does have jewelers on staff, tough break but it's part of the game.

First time when I hear about this show, did a search on Google and everybody tends to agree that it is staged. So the damn producers are pushing quality reps in the spotlight. Wonder how many idiots will get here thru Google after watching the show and try to find a high end rep to pull the same trick.

LOL. I just watched it. I thought it was interesting to see a decent rep featured on television rather than the usual Canal Street crap.

You guys are aware that all of these pawn broker "reality" shows are completely fabricated, right? These are not documentaries. Every second of the show is staged. The items offered for sale are provided by the producers. Each"customer" is provided with one of the featured items a backstory to tell in exchange for the opportunity to be on television. The show is just shot to look like these are cusotmers walking in off the street with items to sell or pawn.

For those who saw the episode, is anyone familiar with the serial number verification web site they used? It looked like an AP web site, but I can't seem to find it. I'm wondering if it's a real web site or not?

Havent seen it yet, but that stuff is definitely staged. Dont they research the items beforehand and what not?

So they definitely are just trying to make a show of it. Buying a gen Audemars for $5k is a great deal for them, but makes for boring TV compared to OMG A SCANDAL WE GOT RIPPED OFFFF!!!

I'm a Noob of sorts and the first thing I noticed were the bezel screws!
Pretty much 99% of reality shows suck so my tv just sits there collecting dust.
And,yes,all staged.

I have been involved on the business end with some of these shows and the producers are not staging the sellers. That would kill thw show if discovered. Instead, some customers will choose to bring their stuff to the store or misbehave in the hope that they will be put on the show. That said, this shop was picked vbecaise the producees found the employees, location etc. compelling. The backstories and drama are played up. Oeople naturally act differenly in front of a camera. But that is not the same thing as staged.

As for this particular episode, I havent seen it. That said, jewelers and manufacturera know just how good reps can be but down play the rep threat intentionally to instill consumer confidence. As a real pawn shop, there is no reason les would intentionally allow themselves to be scammed and show weakness. He us going to jave to run that shop lkng after the shoe is cancelled.

I have a good friend who works as a Producer for TruTV. This show is 100% staged. I agree with what you say about most other channels, and their reality shows. Pawn Stars for example. You don't just drive up to the shop with a 1776 flag for sale. They do recruit people whom they use for various reasons. The exchanges between the parties is taped, and many times edited, to make better TV. That's to be expected. But this particular show on TruTV ( as every other show on that network) is 100% staged.

Oh man the editing is crazy on all these shows. The more you look for it the more you notice it. Fake facial reactions to situations and overly long pauses are just a couple of tricks they use. I guess the real situation is kinda boring.
