Hello fellow french members,

I have an unusual question for you

Is it true that in France in any bank if you open a bank account and get a Visa/MasterCard than the bank gives you a PIN and you are not allowed/able to change it. Sounds pretty bad to me...

I have a friend there who just relocated for work and this is what he told me. Or if you guys know any bank can issue a card with the option to change the PIN.

Many of us have several cards from different countries and difficult to remember so many numbers

Thanks in advance

It's true you receive your card with a PIN that you can not change at all

Some banks allow you to choose the PIN.

Thanks for the replies. I think that being in the 21st century, changing the pin is a basic must, if you have several cards, it is difficult to memorize them all.

If there is any bank in France that allows you change the PIN please let me know the name.

yes, that's true :
PIN number is given with the credit card (issued from the bank you've choosen) and cannot be modified....

But, if you ask for "high range" credit card (what is called in FR as "Infinite" for Visa cards or "Platinum" for Mastercards), in some bank you can change the PIN number
(check at "Société Générale" : they offer this special service, but you'll to pay for it... and you'll need to have/earn large amount of money to get such a card)

That's life and banks' rules in France !

You can only choose your PIN before received your Credit Card because the pin code is coded in the chip, in a part than can not be modified.
If you want to change your pin, you have to change your credit card. Chips used in french's credit cards are the most secured in the world.

true.
Société Générale is the only one that offers such an opportunity (to my acknowledgement)

BTW in france the CC lifetime is actually 30 months, once the CC ends, you get a new CC with the same PIN code, so that the PIN you have to remind of is basically the same all your bank account's life

With an American Express, get from France, you can choose your pin code. But the Amex doesn't work everywhere in France.
With a Visa, or a Master, it's very easy to choose the pin code in Belgium, with a lot of banks ...
