Hello.I am new here and new to Reps.I got a new PAN 113 today from helloreplica. It looks great, the lume is not too bad.I wound it up and set it to the time on my atomic clock at around 1:30PM.When I got home from work around 10:30PM it was almost 5 minutes slow.It has the ETA 6497 movement made in Asia.Is it defective or broken?Damaged in shipment? Or does it need to break in and maybe be regulated? I thought this movement was very accurate. Thanks for any help you can give me.

Well, the big issue is if it is consistently 5 mins slow every 9 hours. If the deviation is consistent, you can probably have it regulated to within acceptable limits. If the deviation is erratic, you may need a service on the movement prior to trying to regulate it. You should let the movement run for a few weeks prior to any of this, though.

Checked it again today.5 minutes slow in 9.5 hours about the same. How hard is it to get someone to work on these things? My local watchmaker seems to think Asian movements are junk.I don't think he will touch one.

Go to a different watchmaker - I brought one to a different watchmaker after I was told the watch was dead and 'beyond repair' - it is now running well......................

Good, there is no way that you could regulate this amount of error out of the movement. I have just experienced a similar problem with the same movement.

In my case it was 6 minutes a day. The problem was caused by the stud that secures the hairspring falling off allowing the hairspring to float free. It slipped until the end of it got to the second stud, which is used to regulate the watch, where it held itself in place. This second stud has a slot in it which the spring passes thru and effectively controls the effective length of the hairspring. With the spring now secured some 5mm from it's original position it ran slow, really slow.

When I opened the watch up I did not find the original stud, which is not surprising since I wasn't looking for a floating part at the time. It's probably somewhere on the floor now!

I had to make a new stud, which is no easy task since it is only about 2mm long. Here is the end result:

Note the brass colored stud; this is what controls the effective length of the hairspring and hence the time keeping. The larger silver colored thing is what I made; an old staff cut down to size. I had to superglue the hairspring to the new stud since cutting a slot in something that is only a few thou in diameter is not easy. With the new stud in place I could re-adjust the regulation and got it back to within less than a minute a day or better.

In short, this is not a trivial repair and so sending the watch back was the right choice. I suspect that you had a similar issue since the watch was working but kept terrible time.

By the way, the swan neck regulator may look nice but in reality it does nothing. The spring force is nowhere near strong enough to hold the regulator against the adjusting screw.

I should have made a nicer job of the replacement part, at least in terms of appearance, but believe me when I say that working on a watch hairspring is really difficult. It is so easy to permanently damage the hairspring that once I was able to get the new part in place I was more than happy to put it back together.

Don't be put off by your first watch purchase. While these types of problem do occur they tend to be rare and are normally a consequence of shipping or poor assembly. Once you get a working watch they tend to stay working at least until the dirt and crud do there work which is normally a few years down the road.

Re: New PAN rep runs super slow.

Thanks.Sounds like you had the same problem.I got an e-mail last night from the seller. They have the watch now and are fixing it.Another problem was when I wound it it just would keep winding and never got to the point where you can't wind it anymore.I hope they get it fixed. It's a beautiful watch and at $138 vs. $5600 for a gen I guess you can't go wrong.
