I have to admit that I have been admiring this watch for quite some time. It's by no means an affordable reps and at such price point, I could easily get 3 different reps. However, it's been top on my wish list.

What do you guys think about this piece? I am sure the PVD is much better than the standard rep PAM. Apart from that, some improvement done on the dial (recessed PR indicator) and vintage T lume colour. Do you think it's worth the asking price? This may be hard to answer but I just want to know your opinions. I know this watch has been out of production for quite some time. River has it many months ago and a seller on iOffer have offered this watch for about 700 USD too. River was less expensive at around 600USD.

How about the case? I know that DSN uses much different case from what we usually see on other reps.

I like DSN's PVD as well, and think this is a nicer looking watch than the 27A that he currently offers.

The crown guard pin protudes too much and I think that would bother me. Not having access to the same (or any) PVD service I don't know how I could fix this elegantly.

I'm quite close to asking him if he could flatten a CG pin on one watch just for me...

I assume that's the more correct look.

Taka, I thought that River's price was $700+ the last time he had this watch, also?

For the 028A, it's an apples to oranges comparison, however, since DSN's PVD is miles better than normal rep PVD and only DSN's watch has the recessed PR indicator on the dial. Comparing it to any other 028A rep (even with the ETA/SOPROD 2892-2) isn't really a fair comparison.

I ordered a 027A, as it appears to be a little bit more accurate case and that it will be easier to upgrade the crown and CG (both of which need upgrading/improvement).

If I am not mistaken it was 599USD shipped but he has only 3 pcs?

Nevertheless, glad to know that this is not the usual "shorter" case. I agree, this watch does not need much modding. How's the datefont? I feel that it's still not thick enough from the picture. Cyclops may need replacing too.

Taka,
I'd go with the 27A, but that's just me. The PVD finish on this one is great, head above any other on the market sans custom aftermarket PVD services provided by some members mainly from RWG forum, however...it may leave you longing for even better PVD work, it's still quite matte in finish and slightly lighter in color.

If you're bent on 28A, go for the 27/A and get it PVD'ed. At least you'll be able to fix the round CG pin and source a better looking spare crown.

River's last 27/28 batch with Soprod ETA-2892-A2 was going for $799. That was about January 2008. He claimed he had 4 pieces only while more than 20 people (including myself) bought it at the time from him, so he wasn't exactly frank about it. Also, he accepted (after some hard nosed haggling) $700 for it by most of us.

Good luck with either one, both are quite a catch. The only little flaws I could tell from his pics were flat-top letter 'A' in Panerai txt on the dial, and the slightly incorrect shape of a PR arrow indicator. CG pin would require a little flattening, and the watch would benefit from better crown, but that's now hair pulling. Everything else including case work, mag, DW, dial lume and numerals etc is top notch.

cheers,
b

And it was directly after the above advice from B in an email exchange that I sent my payment to DSN.

Sound and sage advice, babola! I've already got the t60 crown on order... (pity the t48s are only 1.2mm stem size)

Thanks so much for the advice. It makes sense with the PVD being still not perfect and CG pin needs flattening + crown changed. I will really think hard about it. What is holding me back from getting the 027 is the flat textured dial. I think it's just too common.

As for the crown, it is not a big problem. I think I may be able to find 289x stem with 1.2mm diameter. Like most ETA movements, they come with 2 stem sizes.

You could have him put together a SS 028A for you to be PVD'd later....

Smart suggestion my friend :) ...I'd probably do the same if I was in the market for 28/A 8)

On the stem size issue, it's easily rectified by addition of a stem adapter.

I will contact DSN for the arrangement. Anyway, the caseback for the 2 models are exactly the same, aren't they?

Correct!

Both PAM27 and 28 A-series come with OP6508 case number.

B-series is a different story, though.

cheers,

I have asked him and he said he is gonna release 027b instead

However, I think that should not be a problem.
