hi all,

I contacted Vac to do a custom build for me. Project will be a 201/a & 202/a non-matching dial. I am after a sort of burnt orange non-matching dial (numerals will be orange to replicate the oxidation of the tritium due to the varnish, while hands will be off-white due to not have the varnish). I have posted the dial Vac has below along with 3 other pics of gen dials for comparison.

My preferred dial is the LAST pics of the 202/a with the numerals being the MOST orange, at least to my eyes. I just want to try and match this color as close as possible which is why I am asking all of you for your take on which of these dials the Vac FGD dial resembles most. Can always try a different mixture to see if we can get a closer match.

It could be my eyes playing tricks on me but I would like others to chime in to give me a 2nd opinion of the TRUE color of the numerals and which dial MOST resembles the Vac dial in color tone.

OK please have a look and let me know what you think.

The "correct" color varies honestly... i've seen some god awful gen dials that did not age well.

If you are going for a 201a i'd use a cream colored patina. It just looks better IMO.

For a 202a... i think an orangey lume (like the last one) looks reeeaaal nice, especially with non-matching hands.

Ask vac to use a semi satin light lacquer over it instead of matte spraying it.

If you go 202a... send the case to avitt cause it's worth every penny.

good luck to ya!

Thanks for the comments. Actually I am NOT after a correct color per say, I just LOVE the orange hue of the numerals on BOTH the 201/a and 202/a. I have seen and held gens of both with cream/yellowish numerals and orangey ones. I just prefer the orange hue regardless of the case finish. Maybe my question was not clear enough. What I would like to say is the fact that Vac has a custom 202/a dial at the moment, shown above, which he thinks has an orangey hue. He sent me the pics for me to see if I like the color tone. I REALLY do like it BUT it might be the lighting that makes it look LESS orange than the last pic of the gen 202/a. The reason why I posted the 3 gen pics is to compare the Vac FGD dial to the gen dials. I just want to know which one the VAC dial comes closest to in terms of color tone and hue. Remember that I am after the orange hue of the LAST gen pic (202/a). I need to decide if I want VAC to make another dial which is EVEN more orange than the one pictured above. Hope this clarifies what I am after. Thanks again for all the help.

BTW, the numerals will be painted orange BUT there will be NO LUME as per gen of this era. Of all the gens I have handled, 5 201/a and 2 202/a, none of them retained your luminosity!!

ah.... gotcha..

well in that case... why does your dial look so grey?

As for the color it looks pretty orangey to me. you gotta understand that taking pictures (and looking at pictures) of patina varies quiet a bit (unless he's a very good photographer) and it's honestly harder than one might think to capture the true color in a photograph.

no idea why the dial looks grey. Good question though and one I will clarify with VAC. Could be from lighting or sunlight hitting the dial in that position.

Will definitely ask for a semi-satin lacquer like you suggested.

Which of the gens do you think the numerals of the VAC dial resembles closest to:

1. Cream 202/a
2. Very yellow 201/a
3. Stained yellow 201/a
4. Orange 202/a

Thanks again for the help
