Hi guys, in a month or so i will be moving to Germany for a prolonged period of time maybe a year or more. I am thinking to take my car there. Could you please tell me what are the registration fees in Germany for a non EU registered car ?

Thanks

Mhhh... this varies a lot pending the car. Can be very smooth in case it's technically identical to one model sold in Germany. Can be hell if there is not the same model available here. Also keep the import customs fee in mind...

Thanks for the input. What might the import tax cost me, does it depend on the year of production or the cylindric capacity ? or both ?

You can drive your car in Germany as a tourist for one year. Have your first residence in your home country.
I drove a 500 SE in the US for 2 years with a German licence plate. Check with your local insurance.

Thanks guys, I've read that tourists can drive their cars no more than 6 months, one more thing is the driver's license. I've heard that it is valid no more than 2 months, after that i will have to get the german license, which is not that easy i guess.

Where are you from ? Are you planning on taking up German residence ? I drove in Australia for 6 years on a German licence and only was fined twice for this. On the upside I did not get any demerit points.
With the open borders I find it hard to believe they can keep taps on how long you have been driving your car in Germany, as long as your insurance and registration are up to date and you stick to the road rules (as hard as it may be)

Hi,

No talk no hussle! Just say you are here for a short period. No need of waking up the fed dogs :)

Just be sure to have a valid insurance with you and have good enough driver skills. Here are way to much people on the road and often being aggressive!

Greetings

Import tax is around 20% of the car's value, independant of displacement and what is leaving through the exhaust pipe.

Make sure it's insured and technically in order. Apart from that - why not call the German Botschaft and ask them. They are usually very helpful there.
