Need Advice: My PAM 312 VSF crapped out from overwinding?

Hey Guys,

I noticed the other day that my Pam 312 stopped working. I bought it new from Trusty, and I've only had it for about a year. I've been wearing it daily for the last two months.

Could I have overwound it? I usually shake it to wind in the morning. Could I have shook it too hard?

If anyone has any advice, please let me know.

Have it serviced and you'll be fine!

Hello!

No, it will not be possible to wind the automatic movement too tightly.
Shaking too hard... Well, everything can be done unnecessarily, but if you did it on a physically reasonable scale, then I also doubt it very much.

If the rotor is spinning, but winding does not occur, then it is necessary to wind through the crown (perhaps the problem is in the self-winding module), but if it is not possible to wind from the crown, then it is already necessary to carry out a full diagnostics and return it for repair.

Sometimes small screws will come loose and get caught in the gears. This has happened to me with a few auto VSf movements in the past.

I believe up_right could be on to something here:

It is only a wild guess, but maybe item A is a screw
and item B is a movement holder (currently blocking the hairspring),
and both need to be screwed back into area C (see pic below):

Plaasbaas is totally right here, the movementholder or so called „clamps“ came loose here which caused the watch to stop since it is blocking the balance from spinning. You shouldn’t shake it anymore and handel it with absolute care, so the tiny balancespring or the wheel itself doesn’t get bend. If you are able to open the caseback you can do so and extract both parts carefully to put them back in place and also tighten the second pair of clamp and screw. You have to hope that the balance or spring has not been bend as told, because if so it wont be keeping time very accurate anymore…

I generally dont advise anybody to shake their watch excessively and certainly not to wind the watch. Winding over the rotor (automatic module) is much more inefficient then winding with the crown, you‘d have to shake the watch like ~30 seconds to have the same effect of one single crown turn. (Depends on the movement of course)
And secondly most movements are put together in china under poor conditions, screws are sometimes overly tightened and sometimes very loose from what i have experienced, so always be careful unless you have it serviced. Thats just my opinion and thats why i always service my watches :)

You guys were spot on! I took this pic this morning, and sure enough, I see the loose screw now in a different spot. And the balance won't move from a light shake, so it is definitely now stuck.

Thank you so much for all the input. I will take it to a watch repair for service. I will post updates after the repair.

Got the Vsf Pam312 back from the watchmaker. A simple loose screw, like everyone suspected. Now running great again and back in the rotation.
(Other two in the pic are: Seiko Turtle Pepsi modded with domed blue sapphire crystal, franken custom DayDate.)
