While setting the time on my new Navitimer (Fighters) from Josh (my favorite dealer). I unscrewed and pulled the crown out to set the time and the crown came loose, dangling from the stem. Then it came off. Do I send it back? Bring it to local a watch repair? Can't find a DIY for this. Please help. Thanks!

The crown has to be screwed back onto the stem and secured with a little touch of loc-tite. Ropen the back of the case, remove the stem and put some loc- tite (very little) on the threads of the stem, screw the crown back on snug. Let dry over night and re-insert the crown with stem into the movement. But the caseback on and wear it well!

make sure you use loctite blue. the red will lock those threads for ever and a day. in order to remove the red you need heat. blue is not permanent. i use blue on my crown guard screws.

Well I opened the caseback, found the stem release and pressed it. The problem is that I can't use the crown to pull the stem out, because the crown is no longer attached to the stem. So I have a stem that I can't get to (when I press the release it doesn't move at all) unless I take apart the watch, and I don't have the tools to do that. Josh said he'd replace it, but I'd rather not pay the shipping fees on that ($60-$70 round trip) if I can avoid it. Is there a way to get that stem to come out without using the crown?

in your op you said you unscrewed the crown so you could set the watch. a navitimer crown doesn't unscrew. it just pulls out. stick the crown back into the movement and see if you can screw it back onto the stem. if you can do that you will be able to pull the assembly out and put locktight on it.

I didn't realize that the Navi crown isn't an unscrew first type (like my Tag reps), so that's why I thought I had to unscrew it first before setting the date and time. But now that the crown has come off the stem, it won't screw back onto the stem when I reinsert the crown into the hole. The stem is pushed in all the way (the watch is ticking) and is out of reach of the crown.

I think at this point I need to take the movement out to access the stem. Now, I looked into removing a movement. Just how many layers and screws do I have to take off before the movement comes out?

unscrew the back and you will see 2 flat head screws on opposite edges of the movement. they will be holding little tabs that hold the movement into the case. remove the screws and tabs and the movement will come out of the case. be very careful of the dial and the hands as not to damage them. use some rubber gloves like your doctor uses so you do not get an finger prints on things you can't clean. just pay close attention and you will be fine.

hope this helps,

Well, after removing the tabs that held the movement in place, the movement came out and I took the stem out. The crown didn't come unscrewed after all...it broke off. After numerous attempts to reattach it with loctite, etc., nothing was secure enough to hold the crown to the stem AND be able to still fit through the small case tube when reinserting the stem. So I'm sending it back to Josh, who said he'd take care of it.
