I recently bought a PAM217 "destro" from a reputable chinese dealer. I am happy with the watch as it was only $100. It is a Asian Unitas mechanism without the swan neck....but I have just noticed a rather glaring error. The crown protector is upside down. It seems as though the factory has just used a protector from the right-handed 1950. The catch points upwards and not downwards. Does anyone know if I can get hold of another protector. I am thinking of selling this one and getting a Swiss Unitas version but don't quite have the cash at the moment. Any help would be appreciated.

I dunno, but u could try to take it off and flip it. Then just screw it back on. See if its possible.

I´d leave it as it is now... If you flip it the "REG. T.M." will be gone... :(

Just a thought...

good luck!

Did you contact your dealer about this?

That should be the first action item for errors like this

Hi, I think you are being unrealistic expecting a fully reverse engineered crown guard, / mds.

Does the lever on your CG points upward and text Reg. Tm. is engraved on the top of the CG, e.g. facing you ?

If that's is the case than you might just have received a 217 with a 127 CG. Flipping it 180 deg will cause the Reg.Tm. text positioned on the underside of the CG.
David (DSN) would be able to source spare 217 CG (if you ask him nicely :)), I believe.

Hi,

Some CG's open at the TM end, some at the REG end.
You have the former, you want the latter, which is accurate for the 217.

Whether the CG opens up or down varies from model to model, on
the models with plain CG's you can choose up or down, its up to you.

You need to find someone with the opposite problem and do a swap.

e.g. is this the wrong way up ?

Hi mds,
your pic shows the 44mm Fiddy, a 'fantasy' rep (the one that never existed as a gen), so in this case it would be impossible to confirm the lever direction since we can't compare it to the real thing.

As for the other 47mm Fiddy gen's:

- PAM127 Fiddy comes with the CG mounted on the right side of the case, with lever pointing downwards
- PAM217 MM Destro comes with the CG mounted on the left side of the case with lever pointing downwards - again. PAM127 and 217 CGs are not interchangeable simply for the aestetic reasons, if you flip the 127 CG to be mounted on 217 with the lever pointing down, you'll "loose" the Reg.Tm. text on the top.
- PAM203 8 Giorni comes with the CG mounted on the right side of the case like 127, however the lever point upwards (although the early photos of a prototype on Panerai web site show otherwise).

Vintage MM and Luminor Panerai models with early CG sets were mixed bags, CGs mounted on both left and right side of the case, with levers pointing both upwards and downwards...Enzo could 'chip in' here and expand on it... :)

cheers,
babola
