mulling over a 217

OK, more advice, please. I really like the 217 Destro because we lefties too often feel left out  I also really like the PVD coated PAMS. Now the question: is there a gen 217 with PVD or would this be a fantasy? I gather that fantasy watches are something most people shy away from, so I'm not sure how I feel about going that route..... From reading on the forums it appears that Davidsen has the best PVD so I'd like to go with him, but he's supposedly out of Swiss movements--and I guess I'm still nervous enough to hope to get a Swiss movement rather than an Asian one, but perhaps this is misplaced apprehension. Is there any story on whether he will receive more Swiss ETAs from his suppliers in the future, and if not, can I get a movement from somewhere and ship it to him to have installed, or is that just being silly. Should I perhaps get the complete watch sans the movement from him, get a movement from somewhere else, and get someone here in north America to put the two together? I'd love to hear some opinions on these dilemmas. Thanks, everyone!

Yes, any 217/127 PVD would be a fantasy rep. And, honestly, no one would compromise the value of their gen by getting it PVD'd, unlike a 000 or 005 (both of which I've seen gens of with aftermarket PVD).

Having said that, I owned a PVD'd destro MM20 rep from Davidsen for a while. It was great, if I'd have ordered it with the lower sapphire instead of the Fiddy style domed sapphire and silver hands isntead of gold, I'd probably still have it.

Here's a pic:

Oh, and I don't think DSN is out of Swiss movements, period, I just think he's out of "Swiss" Panerai movements. The MM20 has a solid caseback, so you could simply have him use an undecorated Swiss 6497. Problem solved!

Hoolie: thanks for the response. I think you may be right: problem solved with the closed back. I thought the 217 had a visible back. I am finding, though, that PAMS are such a minefield for idetification that just when I figure it is sinking in, it isn't...... I don't really care too much whether the watch is a fantasy or not. For me it is more a question of just looking really cool--which I think a PVD 217 does. Besides, here in Vancouver, I suspect thare's probably one person who knows anything about gen Panerais out of our 3 million. Just isn't a watch capitol at all. Thus I wouldn't be lynched by the PAM Police for the sacrilige of wearing a PVD 217 rep in public!

No, you're right. The 217 *does* have a display case back. I was saying that a destro MM20 would solve that problem because the MM20 is closed caseback.

I say go for it. Get the PVD 217 and just go with an undecorated Swiss 6497. The watch is a fantasy, anyway, so what's the difference?

Or, you could go with a PVD destro MM20 like the one pictured and "hide" the undecorated Swiss movement behind the closed case back.

Either way, you've got a sharp new watch on your wrist...

......well I'm still confused, Hoolie. Sorry! I thought a MM20 was the same as the 217 (the MM standing for 'Marina Militaire'). Obviously not if it comes with a closed back, which the 217 does not. What is ithe MM20 designation so I can see a photo or two of the gen version (I tried on the Watch Quote but couldn't find one termed MM20). I do see by the Watch Quote that there is a PAM 219 which is presumably a Destro version of my 112. Is it repped? It might actually be better for me because I note that the 217 has a whacking great case and I have small wrists. Also, does the gen 217s have the domed crystal? that's what I think I see in the pics--and I don't think a domed crystal is for me. Cheers again!

The MM20 was a watch that USED to be made by Ken Trading/RXW watches in Japan. Panerai got a court order to force them to stop producing the watches in Japan. They were 47mm with gold hands and a CG, much like the 127/217. Although they just said "Marina Militare" on the dial. No Panerai markings. They sold for about $1000.

There are a couple of people here on the boards that have gen MM20s. DSN's is a rep of the MM20 and Panerai die hards would call it a rep of a rep!

Not that it makes any difference, because NO ONE knows what an RXW MM20 is, but I'm pretty sure the destro and any PVD versions of this watch are fantasy, too.

These "real" RXW watches are not to be confused with the eBay "RXW" watches that sell for $100 or so.

Here is the website for the real RXW -- http://rockxwatch.com/eng/
