I have got a question for you PAM experts. You all know that I just got a 203a from DSN. Last week when I was winding my watch before work I noticed that it didn't feel the same when I was winding it. It used to wind very smoothly, like my new fiddy does. Now it feels "rough" and almost like it doesn't engage every tooth. Like it's skipping some. Its hard to explain except it just doesn't feel right. Very rough and you can hear that it sounds rougher too. Feels like it is slipping past some of the teeth.

I haven't contacted DSN yet as I wanted to get an idea from you guys if it is just me or what. Thanks all. If there IS a problem with the movement would this be something I would contact the maker over? Or after a few weeks is it just my problem now?

Well, I'm sure DSN will take care of the problem for you, if that's the route you want to take.

The bigger question, in my opinion, is: Do you want to take the time and the inherent risk of sending the watch back to China for something that is likely a $25 fix at your local watch smith?

Personally, I'd take it to a competent watch smith first, then, depending on the cost to fix it, decide from there.

I had a stem issue with a RXW MM20 PVD rep that I had from DSN and it literally took the watch smith 20 mins and $15 to fix. Your call, though.

Good luck!

open the caseback.

look at your winding gear ( ratchet wheel and mainspring barrell wheel) please check the screws that hold them down.

if one is lose...that describes the problems you have. be careful, one is left hand thread !

the 6497 eta movement and all copies of the movement are really easy to work with. like HU said, check the winding gears first. the little wheel is left hand thread, so obviously with that one the righty tighty lefty loosy is thrown out of the window. the rest of the screws are normal. again, HU's advise will probably solve your problem, however...

what I always do with any watch i get is check the tightness of ALL screws. any loose screw (including the case mounting screws) could cause your problem, especial the one on the bridges that hold the second, third and escapement wheels.

don't forget to make sure the little screw that holds the stem in place is tight as well. that can cause slipping.

good luck mate.

Wow thanks guys. That's all good advice.

I am hesitant to go through the trouble of sending it back to HK. The problem is I'm so new to this stuff that I don't have the tools to open the case. Is there a particular type that I need or should any set do? I've seen a couple different sets on amazon.

Nevermind. I educated myself....stickyballs, duct tape balls, $39 wrenches etc etc

So I took your advice and started checking to see if any screws were loose. This on was loose. I tightened it but you cant tighten it too much without the gear turning. So I will get it snugged up and see if thats the problem. Then I guess I will pull the crown and see about that. PS. Doesnt Panerai's need to plaster its name all over the movement strike you as Louis Vuittonish? Like "Everybody look at me!!" Eh maybe im just cynical. :)

Spoke too soon. Tightened that and it winds just as bad. Even catches a bit, have to back off on the crown and move forward again. Any thoughts?

That screw I tightened.....it moves as the gear moves??? I move it back and forth and the screw moves too?
