I have a poorly-functioning oyster perpetual date that one of the great TDs sent to tinker with. Is there a way to ID a low-cost generic movement? I'll pull the movement around the holiday break, but am not really set up to do any disassembly (yet). While I do want to get the gear to disassemble one of these, I thought I might try to find costs of a basic replacement movement before I tear into it. My biggest issue is figuring out "what" type to order for the watch? If anyone has input on what I'm looking for or where I should look, I'd appreciate it.

Some high res pics would help

Hmm, don't know that these pics will count as "high res", about as good as I could get with an old cell phone. The TD is USA In Stock, there's no factory info in particular with the watches, she specializes in "entry level" stock. It may simply be too low end to have a named movement.

Yikes, those look terrible. Can't figure out how to edit post to delete the first one. Here's a new attempt with more light...

Looks like some variant of the DG2813, the Nanning version I think. I suggest getting an Asian 2836 from AlieX, ebay etc and a new set of hands from Raffles Time.

Hey folks, I'm back with this same watch. I bought the cheapest movement I could find on AliExpress, $12, just to give replacement a shot. Wasn't bad, but I can definitely tell it's a cheap movement, the balance wheel just stops sometimes, a quick puff of air will get it going again, or a shake of my wrist. But it's not consistent in how long it will run between getting hung up.

Question is this: should I use this as an opportunity to attempt a service on the movement, disassemble, clean, oil or is that pretty advanced for someone with essentially zero experience. Alternately, should I just get a slightly better movement? If that, how do I source a "better" one? Is it a case of you-get-what-you-pay-for, and just find something in the $60 range?

Bonus question, the loupe that I bought with this is terrible (also the cheapest I could find). What is a good brand for a loupe/microscope/etc for a hobbyist?

Thanks all.

You got the answer here

If it’s a cheapo 2813, something will break as you take it apart or when you try to put it together. Especially with you have zero experience of watchmaking

Also, to do service you need a set of oils that are pretty expensive, plus good tools, tweezers and screwdrivers…all in all a couple of hundred quid if not more
