Hi folks.
have an ,well let me call it a hybrid :? Panerai.I bought it this summer in Turkey.got i cheap(50 euro) after pointing it out that it had an Radiomir dial .Got it due to it had an nice finish on the casing.
Have been in contact with davidsen regarding a new Dial (217 dial)and a new crystal(former exploded last week). My problem is that i want to replace the automatic movement that was in the watch with an 6497 movement.Trial fitted it but i need som form of spacer for the movement,do you think this is an doable project ? or should i just save the parts money and go for a good rep?need some good advice for this.i could offcourse just get the new crystal, but the wrong dial is just laughing me in the face every time i look at it.Have enclosed some pics of the project.Im quite new to this hobby ,so please bare over me for lack of knowledge.

Look like a fun project, but I'd probably save your money and just buy a nice rep. You will probably spend a lot trying to get that hand wind to fit.

Just my 2 cents..

Hello and welcome to RWI :)

When I was just getting into this hobby I had the exact same idea in mind with a cheap Pam rep I got from Ioffer. Babola was nice enough top respond to my post at TRC or RWG stating that it was near impossible to do.

Having never torn apart any of my watches to the level of removing stems and movements, I can't tell you why, but it has something to do with the movement needing teh appropriate seating (for lack of a better term) and as you are finding, the 6497 doesn't really fit in a case designed for the Chinese cheap auto movement.

I am sure some experts will chime in and good luck with all your hobby endeavors with watches :)

Right from the get go, I would say the crown alignment will be the most critical item. Assuming the crown can line up with the movement and the movement will sit in the case properly, you have two major problems, how to attach movement to dial, and how to keep movement/dial assembly properly located 3-dimensionally in the case.

Not too big of a deal at first glance, but then as you get into it, you may find it will be darn near impossible and if possible, you may spend the cost of a good rep on this hybrid.

I am not one who likes to quash ideas and projects, but I would think that you will be upside down in this project pretty quickly, however, if you take your time and THINK a lot about the entire project, you may be able to figure out how to overcome each problem and *MAYBE* not spend a fortune doing it.

If you are good with a Dremel and brass, you may be able to make your own spacer ring to hold the movement. But the crown and stem is still an issue, and remember the crown and stem are vital for a hand-wound watch! You will be winding this puppy at least once a day when you wear it.

Either way you go, good luck. If you do go for the project please post some pics here and there to keep us informed.
