Marina Militare Question / Paneristi help wanted

I just purchased a drop-dead gorgeous Marina Militare from DSN, (will post images as soon as my new strap arrives, promise.) The specs for this watch has often been referred to at ANTON C's "Passage of Time" blog: http://anton-c.blogspot.com/2008/07/marina-militare.html.

All the specs are high-end DSN quality. Here's the question:

The watch comes with a very generic sanitized Swiss Unitas 6497 movement (mineral back, no markings) and a plain stainless back cover, no markings. Davidsen advises either cover is perfectly appropriate but is it a fact that the GEN version of this watch was released without any identifying PANERAI markings on the movement or the case-back?

The assumption is that we all strive towards a proximity to GEN. Some of us go the extra mile and have major mods done. Does anybody know if PANERAI released this vintage version without discernible markings?

A mm watch is a sterile "homage" watch. This looks like a Pam but is technically not a replica. Does it say panerai on the dial? If not then you have a homage.

This is a gen panerai

And this is a homage with NO panerai maRkings.

And here is a replica of this style of watch.

I hope this helped and I hope you didn't buy a homage thinking you where getting a rep.

Thank you. This is exactly the answer that I needed. Indeed, it's a homage watch without any reference to Panerai. For the quality and attentiveness of the product delivered by DNS, I could not be happier but now I have a clearer understanding of what I bought. Very grateful to you for clarifying.

Yes, there were military watches that came with no Panerai markings on them, but that were supplied to the Italian Navy by Panerai.

@frigpig - I think the OP was asking about the actual vintage Panerai watches of the 40s and 50s that were issued to the Italian Navy, not the modern renditions meant to reflect those vintage pieces.

If it is a vintage rendition then a 6497 isn't that accurate. You need a vintage mvt :)

@ hooli- that's exactly how I feel. I have done the vintage movements before but as per gen most had solid case backs and why cover up a beautiful vintage mvt. So I've converted to 6497s in my builds. Just bc they can be fixed cheaply or even replaced compared to servicing a 616 or something else.
