I purchased a Fiddy from Andrew.....its on its way :)

This is a Swiss movement watch yet appears to have canon pin issues.....why? I thought that if it were Swiss the issue wasnt present.

Also any one who can contribute any ideas on mods this may require I would appreciate you input.

Doesn't matter if it's Swiss: the pin issue persists unless it is corrected. There's a lot of notes on this in the various forae.

You need to send it to a worthy watchsmith - again, look in the various boards for candidates - RWI, TRC, RWG.

It's a pain, and can be avoided if you buy from a dealer who 'gets' this issue, e.g. Davidsen. But for many this is overly anal and so it does not merit correction ... who will notice but you and/or watchsmiths / AD?

I AM anal about this so I have had all my PAMs corrected :?

BBB,

Thanks for the insight, I intend on correcting the issue also. It bothers me and I don't even have the watch yet.

I would like to perform the mods myself if possible........searching the archives:)

That is gutsy (mod yourself).

Here's mine and fixed - note how the head of the pin is not recessed - it was, until I sent it to Ziggy:

Aye, it is a bit more than I have done before (plenty of hands, dials, and light repair), but there are a few good write ups.

Whats the worst that could happen

BTW your Fiddy looks great!

I really dig this look and have got a strap to match...

Sorry whoever I ripped that off of

I am not an expert, but what I understand is that the recessed pin problem occurs because of the sandwich dial thickness. The regular ETA / Unitas is not specifically made to be fitted with a dial of this thickness.

So the question then becomes:

Does a shorter hour wheel and canon pin along with gen hands make it perfect?

The purpose of the taller cannon pinion and taller hour wheel is to provide the clearance between the sub seconds hand and the hour hand. If there is no sub seconds hand, then the shorter cannon pinion may work.
Also the post of the minute hand must be .45mm in order to sit flush to the cannon pinion....this applies to any cannon pinion size.

Look at that second hand! Wouldnt it be cool to make it shine that way!!
Sometimes you get a shot like that you could not duplicate if paid!

Yes - cool Avatar  :!:
You got it: I did not have the talent to arrange this shot, the afternoon light streamed in when I hit the shutter and so it was. I wish I'd set it up ...

Would capped hands do the job just as well as cannon pinion/hour wheel mods?

I would not do the capped hands as I do not think they look right. I would send it to Ziggy or Vacum to have the cannon pin issue corrected and I would also have it serviced and super lume done.

FWIW I would not do this myself. You ask what can go wrong... You can wreck one of many things. Not that it cannot be done, I am just saying that I would not do it.

Seconded. I know CJ's tried hands' swaps - his experience made me think unless you have a fair bit of time then it makes sense to send it off.

I'll stick to basic mods until I have the time

Maybe you do - in which case go for it, if you treasure 'learning by doing' :)

So I think the consensus is .... go ahead and do it, but only if you are blindfolded!
