Ah ha, looks like your son-in-law has been teaching you some quaint, colloquial, British sayings.
Joking aside, I have witnessed too many friends who had their lives ruined by drugs/booze. Sadly two of them lost their lives and one has mental issues.
The two that died were alcoholics, very sad to die at a young age.
