I recently bought a watch from Marv who I have not used before.

The transaction went very smoothly and I received my watch last Friday. I wore it all Saturday no problems. I went out on Sunday and when I got home I checked the time and the bezel insert had fallen out at some point during the day. Gone.

I messaged him to ask if he could send a replacement as I don't really want to send the whole watch back but would do if necessary.

He said, "If you need a new bezel insert you have to pay."

What are your thoughts on this please? I have had the watch for less than two days and the insert, which was only fixed in place by five tiny sticky pads, has gone. That's a QC issue surely and I now cannot wear the watch because it looks odd without the insert.

It's a JKF Daytona with a black, units per hour (200) insert. Not like I can just pick one up on Ali Express or Raffles.

Is this normal TD behaviour these days?

Check his T&Cs I suppose.

I don't see how it's a QC issue tbh; it's not like they do bezel suction tests. If 5 sticky pads is how those models are put together, then he can't be criticised. Perhaps see if he'll throw a bezel in at cost price, or even split the difference (which I imagine will be peanuts) if you order another watch?

Well, that's annoying, of course. But the TDs do not provide any kind of ‘warranty’ for the product. I assume that the quality defects that led to the loss of the bezel were not recognisable to the TD during quality control. Of course, they could be accommodating and send you the replacement part at their own expense. But he doesn't have to do that. A repair is only guaranteed in the event of transport damage, e.g. if the watch arrives DOA. No TD is liable for damage that occurs later.

Not a comment on the TD, but I'm surprised that those large dial dot kind of things are how the bezel is held on from the factory. Not sure what I thought was used, but not that.

They clearly aren't very adhesive.

I'm sorry to hear this.

I must admit I thought they used the 3m sticky Bezel rings these days.

I have seen this happen a lot when I was selling, usually on hot days, but back then I could easily get Bezels for Rolex, and replace them for the customer.

The Daytonas of the era were all stainless pressed on bezel but most of my Rolex sales were Submariners, a few sales were GMT's and YM 1's and the odd few Breitlings too. Never had this issue with the Breitlings either but they were from a different factory.

Not sure where to find the T&Cs as he doesn't have a website.

I just didn't think in this day and age that if a watch fell apart in less than 48 hours you would have no come back at all. Clearly wrong. It was like that back in the naughties, I guess I thought things might have improved in 20 years.

Oh gee, I have to reinstall a bezel insert myself and I’m going to use adhesive rings. Amazon has them

I’d be annoyed with the dealer too. I had a Daytona come with a detached flip lock last year that I finally installed recently. It was clearly in place in the QCpics so very mysterious how the spring bar went missing by the time I got the watch

Similar response from the dealer here too; gotta buy a new part

I’m thinking, when it comes to bezels, that one might have to buy a spare insert when you order a watch just to have just in case

Must agree with the fellow members and I hate to play the "it could be worse" card but... he could refuse to souce you one even if you pay.

I'll never forget the Glashutte diver I had not long ago that had a stripped crown. A TD told me he could get it, but I would have to buy a watch from him so he could send both. So, I consider your position a better on that mine. A $70 crown turned out to be a $270 one.

Another good example of this is the very well known fact that VSF Seamaster 300's have weak crown/tubes. A TD couldn't cover the amount of these that fail that we see on here.

As you said, you can probably get one from AliExpress to your linking and get a 3M tape ring.

Hold up ....

@Tommy Tom

If you can give me the I/D and O/D I just may have a bezel insert, sorry, I'm not familiar with this model so was it a ceramic or metal insert ?

The one I have is a Black with White Numeral Ceramic, bought it from AliX, but wouldn't fit the Blaken watch I have, if this one will fit you can have it FOC, just pay the postage ;)

Unfortunate bro.

The JKF vintage daytonas are not really that well made and parts are hard to find. I don't really fault Marv for this. He didn't make the watch and this isn't really something you can test for.

No dealer is going to pull apart a watch at QC and purposely stress break a watch.

It happens. Welcome to reps. Especially the older ones.

Either sell the watch M2M and take a $50 hit on it or source a new bezel on AliX or whatever and use 3M tape to secure it.

I’m going to attempt to adhere my bezel insert to my Sub with an adhesive ring soon.

I researched, and the video below was the best one I could find. I plan to follow its procedure and report back in the thread I created about reinstalling my insert. Feel free to watch the video if you’ve never installed an insert before

The bezel insert was glued onto the bezel from factory directly. Pretty solid.
I won't think it will be that easy for the bezel to fell off without any reason......
Parts won't be a problem to get from JKF as long as the watch is from me.
So new bezel insert will be paid for service like said via WhatsApp

It took mine 16 years to fall off. And I had another one years before that fall off sooner than that. Guess it’s just bad luck sometimes

I felt better when a friend of mine lost the entire bezel from his gen 1680, now that’s going to really cost to replace. I think the insert alone costs about $300

16 years. wow....
If it's one or two years, understandable since the glue might turn aged.
But two days...., then I'm accused of offering bad QC. As far as I know, that's not a JKF practice for quality.
Maybe I should take some more efforts to try to take off each bezel insert in future QC to test whether the glue is solid enough? lol

It must’ve just been a lemon. I got a bad two tone supposed filled jubilee bracelet that went dull and would green my wrist if I sweated. I threw all kinds of polish and sealant on it, still wouldn’t help. That bracelet cost me over $100 back years ago too.

No more lemon though,I replaced it with a gen.

As for the bezel insert, I doubt the factory uses 3m adhesive, now that’s supposed to really stay in place. I’ll be finding out

Rep gold plating does fade with time goes on, just a layer of plating :)

Yes, bezel insert was glued. Not hard to get from JKF :)
