+1. CG is obviously early series and the watch looks gen from these pics, but need better pictures to confirm 100%

earlier 104 models had blue anti reflective crystals gving that blue hue.

There we go. I didnt know the early 104 had the open 6. still too hard to tell. Need better pics, but the CG looks okay from what I can see.

There are no Luminor Marina 42mm size... just a few newer 1950 case types. Judging by how it sits on your buddies wrist I would say it is in fact 44mm. if it is a 40mm LM, I don't know of any with the open 6 like grim had suggested.
