Is this a good plan for a Snowflake Submariner?

I am considering building a Tudor. Toward that end I have already ordered an ETA 2824-2 and a Tudor Rotor.

I was going to order a Yuki Ranger kit (Case/Dial/Hands)

But then I got yo thinking about the new Tudor BB36 that I expect to see reped pretty soon. I think it is something that can be reped well and I will probably get one. As I see it, that would leave a duplication.

Then I started thinking about my usual weekend watch, my BB Red. I like it other than I think it is a bit big. And, as odd as it seems on a rep forum, I don't have a Sub. I really don't want a Rolex sub, I would feel self-conscious wearing one (I teach at a Title 1 middle school).

That led me to reading about a Tudor Submariner. One thing I don't like is that the crown guard profile is wrong on nearly all of the rep cases. As such, I am considering a Helenarou 5517 case:

It isn't perfect either; but it looks less wrong than others.

It would include a dial and hands from Raffles:

So, any thoughts, is there a significantly smarter way to go about a snowflake sub?

I would really like to go with a Rose dial instead of Shield dial; however, it looks like the rose dial never existed with the snowflake hands.

See if HR still has any of his 5513 cases. It will be much better for a snowflake than the 5517. You can swap the super dome crystal for a more appropriate t19. The 5513 case has drilled lugs, and it will accept a gen 702 crown.

Here's a couple examples built on the HR5513 as a base.

I sent them a letter asking about the 5513.

Here is a cost breakdown; not all builds use all options:
MovementETA 2824-2$180.0019-Mar-16http://www.ebay.com/itm/222046810995
RotorTudor$19.9919-Mar-16http://www.ebay.com/itm/252316526329
Dial
RafflesSubmariner$34.99
RafflesSnowflake$40.99
YukiSnowflake$119.00Includes hands
YukiSubmariner$115.00Includes Hands
Hands
RafflesSubmariner$14.99Yellw
RafflesSnowflake$24.99Yellow
Back
RafflesTudor Back$24.50
Mounting screws
YukiETA Adapter$14.00
Helenarou10 screws$7.00
Helenarou50 clamps$7.00
Case
Helenarou5517$189.95
Trusty5513 w/2813$148.00
Trusty5513 w/2836$238.00
Crown
Raffles5.3mm$26.99

It looks like a good build would be to use the 5513 w/2836 and a Yuki Dial w/hands along with Raffles Back and call it done. This would use the rotor and the movement would be shelved for another project in the future.

Slightly cheaper would be to go the same route with raffles dial and hands.

People here seem to use both Yuki and Raffles dials, how do they compare?

Well, I wrote HR about the 5513 case. They said they only had a branded case in stock; frankly, it wasn't cheap. So, I asked, considering the price, if they could supply it with a Tudor back. They told me that they won't have any tudor backs in for about a month. So, the communication paused with me saying that I will wait until they have the Tudor backs in stock.

Frankly, the pictures they sent look good, and if they will throw in the Tudor back then I will o that route. As such, the project is on pause for a while.

The rafflestime caseback won't fit. Also Yuki's dials are much better for a snowflake build.

How much is your budget Ibn_Hasaf?

How much is your budget @Ibn_Hasaf?

I was looking for a opinion between Raffle's and Yuki's dials. In the pictures Yuki's look better. As far as budget, not counting the movement and rotor I already ordered, I would like to keep it 400-500 more, 500 is a good top limit.

I would, of course, like to keep it a lot lower. So, lets pretend I said 300 (over what I have already spent); however, qualitative differences could push me to 500.

the 5513 w/2813 would run 150 (+ shipping)
Note that I could go with the 551 w/2836 and hold the movement for some other future project, in that case it would run about 240.

the Yuki dial /hands adds 120
Then the screws, the dial spacer, and Misc other stuff would bring it up to about $300-$400 depending on the movement ordered with the 5513. This is a pretty basic build, as I see it.

Edited to add:
Well, I checked with Yuki on a case. They want $650 for the Tudor 9411 case. Frankly, that is more then I want to spend on a case right now.

Ok, I am getting ready to order the snowflake dial from Yuki:
372191210.jpg

Picture from here

The dial information states:
Come with yellow lume hand set.

Is there anything else I need to include in the order from Yuki?

Edited to add:

To follow this up, the dial and hands are now on order from Yuki

I also wrote to Helenarou and asked:
This project is to make a Tudor 7016 Snowflake Submariner. Can you obtain a branded Tudor 7016 case?

It is, essentially , the same as the Rolex 5513; however, it has different engraving.

The response I got was:
It will available in a week or 2

To keep people up to date, so far I have ordered:

Movement ETA 2824-2 $180.00 19-Mar-16 http://www.ebay.com/itm/222046810995
Rotor Tudor $19.99 19-Mar-16 http://www.ebay.com/itm/252316526329
Yuki Snowflake $119.00 21-Mar-16 Includes hands
Yuki ETA Adapter $14.00 21-Mar-16

I am really considering the cartel case. I can use the machine shop at work to drill out the lug-holes. The reason for going with the cartel case is that it is cheap. Then, if I like the way the project turned out I can order a Yuki case (expensive) at a later date and put the cartel 5513 back together and sell it.

Any thoughts on the cases:
1. Cartel (drill out the lug holes myself and call it done)
2. Helenarou (The case is a bit more expensive, not prohibitively so. . . the real issue is that I am not clear if she can get a Tudor 7016 case; or if it will be a 5513 case. If it is a 5513 case, I will eventually want to 1. get an unbranded case and send it out for engraving, or 2. get a Yuki 7016 case)

My movement and rotor arrived today.

Good: the movement arrived with a spacer ring.
Bad: The Hour Wheel, as seen below, is not on the movement. It is rattling loose in the packaging. When positioned in the movement the inner part seems to turn freely and does not engage anything. also the edges seem raised.

The Tudor branded rotor looks good and it should be easy to install

Really cool to see some vintage tudor sub build. Looking forward to see the completion of your project. I have always wanted to build my own 9401 but I lack the skills to put it together

Yet another piece of the project arrived today, this hand dial set is from Yuki. Yes, I have noticed that they are different colours.

Can you take a picture of the yuki dial in natural light? Outside or next to a clear Window?

That color looks really good on this dial. Is the print bright white or is their some light blue bleeding through?

That was next to a window. In fact I sat it on the window sill for light.

I will try to get a couple of other pictures this weekend

Looks good. So the color is a good representation of the true color? Just need to carefully remove the "-" and we are good to go with yuki' new dial.

Well, for those following this, admittedly dull, saga. I seems to be on hold for a while.

Close to when I started I wrote to Helenarou about a 7016 case. She told me it woul be availabel ina week or two. So, each weekend I have written her about stock status.

The answer I got today was:
Well, Factory is supposed finish the complete case by 1/31 , but they keep delay to deliver to me

Here is the thing, during the school year I live in Kansas, where I work. The school year is coming to an end. As such I want to limit the number of things that I order.

To make matters worse, I will be an a different building next year; so they can't just pile deliveries on my desk during the summer. I don't want to send parts to my home in Salt Lake because my tools are in Kansas, and I have a different project planned for the summer in Salt Lake.

Summary, this project is probably on hold until next fall.
