Is a replica PAM too much of a statement

I have loved the look of the 111 and have been talking for years about it becoming my 40th birthday present (still some years away!). Now I've seen the replicas they seem very convincing but if I wore one is it just crying to be called out for a fake? It's a big and expensive statement. I realise most people wont recognise a Panerai, but what is the reaction from those that do?

You'll get the hand surgically removed - complete with handcuffs and PAM.

Cheap Pam -> higher risk to be called out
High end Pam and mods -> lesser risk

TBH 99,9% of the people don't give a f*ck what you have on your wrist.

depends on you. I wear gens also and the people I know and hang out with know that I am a watch freak. I also use to drive a new car almost every year, until I realized that was just really wasting my money. You got to dress the part as well. Not to knock those on here at all, but try carrying off a Hublot or a Audemars Piguet. Not sure that that many people can carry off a $15k watch.

I was given a 5-figure Glashutte as a year-end bonus by a VERY generous boss. I have never had a single person make reference to it either way. I bet if I asked 50 people how much it cost, I would get an average of less than $200, because even in NYC most people have no idea how much fine watches cost.

If you like the PAM buy without any concern what people will think and if you don't like it, you won't impress anyone by wearing it.

Good replies guys. It's strange but because I have a gen rolex I have no problem with a replica. I think it's a psychological thing that because I've dreamed of owning this watch for a long time it's hard to accept I can finally have one (even though it is just a very good replica). Or is that just nonsense ?!

What's nonsensical about getting the look and feel of a gen at a fraction of the cost. Now you'll have more money to celebrate your 40th in style (when it comes around)..... with the 111 already on your wrist.

To me (now), the only diff between a high end rep and a gen is the resale value or the value increasing over time. If you plan on keeping you reps, who cares. And besides, it seems that reps have a higher resale value. Buy a rep for $200 bucks and do a minor mod or none at all and resale later for $180 or more on this forum. Win-win situation. Enjoy as many watches as you want for the price of a couple of gens.

yep i don't worry about any of it. if someone asks i tell them the truth. (its a rep) and then how much i saved. some people don't know that watches cost more than a few thou... i would just buy the rep and enjoy it. i wear a really bad pan rep despite owning other watches, some real and swiss. i like the style. the 111 is really cool

Nobody cares- i mean literally NOBODY. I'm wearing a gen 088H today and the lady at the bank actually said "Wow that's a big watch"- but she meant it in a derogatory way-

i ONCE had a guy in a pizza place say "Hey guy- nice panerai" while wearing a gen 024D...But I have NEVER had anyone comment on the watch-

My big Fortis Marinemaster gets comments all the time- My WM9 Submariner- comments every now and then.

Panerai are really known amongst the panersiti-a group of a few hundred guys worldwide who post a lot- If you bump into one of those you're dead no matter how good your rep is- I've been flying First Class to Asia and Europe for a decade wearing mostly gen Panerais and the occasional rep- NEVER met one- but who cares- Wear it and enjoy it.

I think one of Avitt's reps are pretty damn convincing, LH is a close second. The water is murky when you include frankens into this dialog. My wife green-lighted me getting a gen, but the money I can spend on my family's well-being outweighs the need for an over-priced gen that I can build at a fraction of the cost!

The FACT is if yo wear a really nice big $200 Citizen or Seiko more people will notice and comment on the watch. You'll get more "Nice Watch" comments with a fancy-ass quartz watch than you ever will with a gen Panerai.

the only way wearing a replica "Impresses" someone is if they know what to look for- Honestly I spot at least 3-4 reps EVERY day- The waiter at lunch today had a Rolex presidential with diamond bezel- uh yeah right. The kid at the auto parts store has the worst submariner rep every- A guy at the mall has a panerai 217 rep- on the replica strap!

As good as most reps are I tend to wear a gen when I am travelling or having any sort of business meeting.

Agreed. The job interview I went on two weeks ago I wore a gen, just on principle, it felt like a honest move without being pretentious. I enjoy my reps and like discussing the hobby to eager ears, but mostly the fun is just appreciating the design of an otherwise overpriced luxury good.

Most people will not know whether it is rep or gen because it is too far away anyway and people don;t care what other person is wearing on their wrist. Wear you rep without fear.

Nobody much cares about your wristwatch it seems. Yet, if they spend to much time staring at your crotch, then that is worrisome. For me anyway.

If you can afford the gen, definitely get the rep 1st. Buyers remorse is high amongst luxury watches. The reps you are now privy to are extremely close to gen... Pam's are pretty sterile watches, the small percentage of gen/rep lovers of the brand are extremely particular and won't be fooled, the rest of the population won't notice or know the difference if they do. Why bother spending more than you have to?

Even a lot of the Paneristi types have trouble spotting a nicely modded rep PAM, and usually the ones that can spot them are also members of these fora and rep collectors themselves.

When you're talking Panerai, especially manual wind PAMs, I could never justify spending the extra few grand for the gen. But then again just over a year ago, I knew nothing about reps, and just as much about gens - like the majority of gen owners. Chances are the only person out there who will be able to identify your PAM as a rep, will be a rep enthusiast their self :)
