I have always loved the look of the Panerai design, it is so unique yet simple and classy at the same time. They don't make huge/drastic design changes to follow the trends of the time and have a very loyal following.

Another hobby I Have is Home Audio, and a lot of my money goes into that. I can't help but think how much the whole Panerai thing reminds of the McIntosh stereo equipt I have. The design never changes drastically, very unique and doesn't follow the trends of the japanese electronic companies, and the value really stays up there even as the pieces age and are used. Classic yet bold and simple.

For those unfamiliar, take a look and tell me what you think:

Also can't help but think that if it were an automobile, it would be a Porsche 911. Again, a classic design, never looks old, no gimmicks and beautiful.

As a one-time McIntosh dealer, I'd go along with that, although I'll confess that my first thought was Krell (another classic US-based audio manufacturer with a tendency to be just a little quirky). :)

My problem with your McIntosh analogy is that the inards of a MacIntosh are, as far as I know, among the most sophisticated and in-house designed components you can get anywhere. Strictly top-drawer stuff. The innards of a Panerai are, essentially, garden variety (and I'm a Panerai fan). If you go on strict visuals (which I don't think you should), I'd say that the Panerai equivalent was the 'Cyrus' series of hi-fi amps/receivers (can't remember who made them but it was a British company). Go by the innards and the sonic version of Panerai is Toshiba/Panasonic/LG/Sanyo/yadda-yadda-yadda.......

The Old Panerai yes. The new Panerai OP movements are in house right? I read an article where it stated the base OP movement can be modified to do just about anything due to it's large size. It's elegantly simple in it's design yet will perform with precision. So by that McIntosh might not be so far off the mark due to it's pricing points.

On the other hand, I see nothing really quirky about Panerai. :D What about Adcom? They are pretty simple (few buttons), very high price units and they are work horses. Try to set one up yourself though and you will be scratching your head. :D

Adcom is mid-fi and really not very exclusive or that highly sought after. Adcom is more similar to Rotel, Parasound, etc...it is basically entry level seperates. Mc compares more with Mark Levinson, Krell, or Classe.

I didn't compare PAM to Krell because of styling reasons.
