Hey guys! Have a couple gold reps that need to be cleaned, they are dull and gunky. Curious on what the best practice is for returning them to their new shiny glory?

Thanks!

this might sound overly simplified but have you tried using a clean microfiber cloth and wiping them down? maybe even damp with water or a little soapy water. If they are dull from being scratched up you could try using a polishing cloth and very lightly going over them.

Paging @McDuck888... our member with all the gold polishing knowledge, and then some...

Twas McDuck888 who recommended I use "Silvo" tarnish guard on my gold plated reps. However, since I bought a couple of tins of it, I've yet to have the need to use it!

Prior to the Silvo, I've been successful in removing tarnish from YG simply using a little light machine oil and microfibre cloth.

Would love to know which oil you used mate, any specific viscosity required?

This might sound counter intuitive but soap and water is the best way to clean gold plate . Use ordinary hand soap which is gentle, nothing with harsh chemicals or degreasers .
If you know your watch is watertight then soap up your hands with soap and warm water, apply liberally to the the watch get in the nooks and crannies. Then wash the wash off with cold water and thoroughly dry .
If you're not sure on your watches WR soap up some tissue paper and gentle clean watch .Remove the soap residue with just wet tissue and then thoroughly dry .Or you could use a soapy cotton bud to clean the watch instead of tissue .
I've had good results using soap and water .Also this hasn't come from my addled mind ,it was recommended to me by a jeweller .
He actually told me EVERYTIME you wear a gold plated item , you should clean and dry it as above to keep the shine and stop it tarnishing .
I think it's also the recommended method if you Google ' cleaning gold plate '.

Yes of course - I was being lazy and couldn't be bothered to pop out to the workshop to check..!

The oil I've used is WD-40 Specialist Multi-Purpose Cutting Oil. (I discovered its gold plate cleaning ability by accident, while using it to lubricate a drill in the process of massacring a solid lug Sub case, because the previous owner had fitted a TT bracelet using 2mm shoulderless springbars.)

I shower with my watch. Then I use a battery-operated dremel, felt tip, and an extremely, extremely tiny amount of autosol to restore the gold colour from tarnish.
