How much should waterproofing cost?

Hey guys need some help here...
I took my SubV5 to a local watch guy to be waterproofed and he told me he will do it for $130 and that he won't guarantee the work because it is not gen... I have taken the watch to other places and they tell me that they don't work on replicas so this guy is my last option... What do you guys think, is $130 a fair price or is he ripping me off?

My watchmaker charges me €15. That includes pressure test and gasket replacement.

Yep, I would expect a clean and service, as well as the waterproofing for that money.

I really don't know a watch guy in Houston that would happily work on my reps, everywhere I go they see me as a bad person when I mention it is a replica... Does anybody know a good watch guy in Houston that would work on replicas?

Yes he is trying to rip you off since he knows it's a rep.

Katt does water proofing, so does strodda if he is taking work. And Stan (WBK) has a guy who does water proofing. All are CONUS. Start there, and good luck!!!

Thank you for the info Ralphy , I think I might have to do that but I would really like to have a local guy working on my watches, I just can't believe in america's 4th largest city there would be no one to go to.

I think $30-75 is fair.. Sometimes watch makers need to glue the crystal, replace O-rings and of course use the proper amount of lubrication.

edit: $130+ is AD pricing.. I paid $250 for my own bergeon tester but have yet to fire it up. Use one of the guys on RWI.

There are glued crystals on waterproof watches? I thought the only good way to waterproof a crystal was using a gasket

If you want to make the drive, I'll be in Austin in 6 days :)

Ideally a crystal gasket should seal, but with rep cases, cheap gaskets, etc there might be tiny imperfections and the best way to try and create a water tight seal would be to use a UV glue.

I hear ya, but if you look at Katt's posts he has super quick turnaround. I would start there. He is in the Twin Cities I believe so you are still probably 2-3 days max with USPS priority mail. I am sure there is someone in Houston that does things like this. I would put out another thread asking specifically if anyone know of someone there. But 1 week isn't bad to get it done by a trusted service provider at RWI.

There you have it Strodda is taking work again, so that is great news! He's awesome to deal with!!!

Good Luck!

Cool! I travel to Austin quite frequently having a couple of friends there. I'm in San Antonio.

But yeah OP, that price is overkill man.

plastic crystals use a UV glue (IE Vintage rolex 5512/1680/1665).

sapphire crystals use a gasket(16800 - present).
