How did you get into building vintage watch replicas?

I'm was curious to hear from builders here on how they get their start building vintage watch mods. How did it all begin for you? How long have you been doing it? Do you have a favorite part of the building process? Have you built your vintage grail watch yet? What were some memorable successes, as well as failures? Is there something that you are still striving to build that you haven't yet? If making mods started with the desire to scratch the itch of ownership of your favorite gen vintage pieces, have your mods succeeded in satiating that desire?

It is funny, when I see certain vintage homage watches that are special, but have made some stylistic decisions I can't behind, I often think, man, if they'd just have x, y, z, it would be so much better. Have you ever picked up a homage, had those thoughts, and just modified out some of those just not quite right features?

Last question...if you are a vintage watch moder, do you also enjoy modern replica watches too?

Thanks in advance everyone....

I have been drooling over ebzen02 's 6152/1 for a long time and thought "I'll never get one that nice unless I build my own"

Obviously you know better, but I joined the forums in 2013 and remember you showing it and then after a while mentioning you lost it so it should have been later. Or I have misread all posts dates, that's possible too :)

I started in 2015 I think, maybe 2014. Changing a strap was a challenge for me back then

That's a bit later than I expected, your gallery shows you've been quite prolific. (And I'm the better for it, haha)

Ebzen, my first real encounter with a rare vintage watch was my best friend showing me a watch he inherited from is father. He acquired it while in the Navy in WWII and somehow the story around it was that it wasn't really worth anything. He showed it to me one day and on the back was engraved Kampfscwimmer 1945 and the owners name. I really didn't know anything about watches but being into WWII history I saw straight away that the family narrative that it wasn't a special watch was a glitch in the matrix. A little digging and of course I found out that it was a Panerai and his future child's college fund. Still had the original leather strap and was fully fully functional.

kilowattore, "Chaging a strap was a challenge for me back that." That's awesome.

I discovered reps after purchasing my 2nd or 3rd gen which led me to purchase a noob v8s 114060 a little less than a year ago, then moved on to a yodog 5512 build that i dissected, that was my first time taking off a caseback EVER. Since then I’ve built about 15-20 watches? Not really sure but definitely the best part for me is the hunt for knowledge and parts. The most memorable failure was effing up a keyless works early on(as many do haha) which led to a lot of research and taking apart a movement for the first time. As for memorable success its the recent build of my grail, gen movement/dial/crystal 1680 with Vietnam parts to fill in the gaps. I don’t think I’ll be done with it for a while but i am very happy with it. My next grail will be a 1675 gmt, haven’t figured out the specifics but hopefully ill get started on it later this year. For me buying a gen just doesn’t have the same magic to it as doing a ton of research, finding period correct parts, working thru issues along the way, and having something i put together to show for it. I don’t think ill ever be into modern watches, anything past a 16610 just isn’t my cup of tea but i do appreciate them.

Inspired by a report about the conversion of an Omega Seamaster 300 Rep to an Omega Seamaster 300 SuperFranken (Gen but Case) I first came to high-end Reps. Before that, I had bought an Omega Seamaster Chrono (Quartz) and a Rolex DSSD (automatic with 2813 movement) during my 2013 and 2014 vacations in Istanbul at the local Grand Bazaar. Both watches belong to the "must not have" category, I simply didn't know much about high-end reps at that time. Only through the reports of some users I gradually came to realize that there are really well-made replicas in addition to the watches in AAA quality. When studying the report on the construction of the Seamaster 300 SuperFranken, I was impressed at one point in particular, namely that an original movement was also used here for the build. I was not aware until then that occasionally original movements are offered second-hand. I would have rather expected that defective watches are repaired and heavily aged watches are refurbished.
However, I bought a 5514 Comex (I just loved the look of this watch) and a 116610 LN Noob v7 with SA3135 movement from a dealer in China. I expected quite a bit of quality from the Noob, after all the Noob Submariners were described as "closest to the original". After a few weeks, I had both in my hands. I was happy. I was happy until I saw the first authentic Rolex 116610 LN in comparison. The glass of the Noob was simply a disaster compared to the glass of the Rolex. And also the bezel insert could not stand up to a comparison. The insert of the Rolex was deep black while the insert of the Noob was rather anthracite. It was clear to me that the Noob needs to be improvement. And since I was by now an avid reader of the forum here, I followed the advice of many and sent the watch to a rep friendly watchmaker, who serviced the movement and also proofed the watches water resistancy.
In the meantime, I also studied the parts market here and kept finding exciting parts that could take my Noob to the next level and I also saw parts from vintage Submariners that inspired me to build a vintage Submariner. Besides that, I also searched eBay for used Rolex parts and found them there too. So I found there a "Zubmariner" dial with SL luminous material and a Gen Spec Case for a 5-digit Submariner. Soon after, and from that moment on it was clear to me that I wanted a "Gen but Case" Submariner, I was also able to buy a used Gen calibre 3135 on eBay at a price that I felt was still reasonable. Gradually I got all the parts together to have my own build made from it, however the result was not perfect in my opinion yet. So I searched further, found more exciting Gen parts (Rolex calibre 3035, Tritium dial for a Ref. 16800, various inserts, Rolex bezel ring for Submariner etc.), so that I could gradually build a "Gen but case" Ref. 16800, a "Gen but case" 16610 LN, a SuperFranken Rolesium YM Ref. 16622 and a SuperFranken GMT Master Ref. 1675. Currently, I still have a GMT Master II Ref. 16710, a "Gen but Case" 16803 LB and a Franken 116520 with white dial and white RubberB in progress, as well as the transition of my Noob v7 to a SuperFranken with Gen cal. 3135. With this, my need for Rolex Sporties should be satisfied as true to the original as possible. If I now start a new project, it should be something special, for example a 116610 extra black, where the case, hands, luminous points and more will be very black. Or a perfect Paul Newman Daytona.

Thanks Kadee. It seems like the knowledge and skill one possesses and friendly contacts in this hobby, the greater the rewards. Seeing vintage Subs and GMTs kind of twisted my perspective of watches. They became an aesthetic standard that all others were judged. Seeing such beautifully made vintage reps here definitely peaked my interest and it seems like a common story here is that those in a similar boat as me took matters into their own hands and just started creating their own. I suppose another another question for folks here would be, how much money had folks spent on creating their own reps before they made one that they were truly satisfied with. I know mechanical skills will vary, but some background on people's starting skill level and enough input would give some sense of things. If Id isn't have a baby on the way, I'd probably dive in as I can't see myself picking up a vintage sub or get anytime soon. $12-15K for a fragile watch is just not something I can pull off.

In the middle of building my first watch - this forum has definitely inspired me.

I've been buying and selling watches for 6 years - in that small span I've climbed many AD "wait lists" and got my hands on almost every modern gen Rolex sports model. It wore me down...I realized it was a high I was seeking; I just wanted to be offered these pieces because they were hard to get - the love for watches was lost. I sold my collection (Oh no...I became my biggest fear, a flipper!). Now I only own a gen 116600 SD4K and a gen Speedy for sentimental reasons.

The two watches that got me into collecting were the Speedy and 1680 red sub. A gen red sub is pricey to say the least. It goes without saying that this was the first watch I started to build after I saw it was feasible with some help from this forum (I'll be honest and say I've since sent the watch to RolexAddict to finish for me...BUT I've purchased more parts and want to complete one myself with this one as the comparison). If I could make an almost perfect replica (rep and gen parts mixed), that'd save me: (1) money (2) from getting ripped off, and (3) it'd become more intimate with the watch due to research and doing it myself. Doing all this research and learning from everyone here reignited my love for watches. It kickstarted my passion again, and opened up a whole new world of watches for me.

I've been lurking here since I got into watches (this is actually my first post) - all I have to say is this forum is a wealth of knowledge and researching gen vs rep parts has launched my knowledge of vintage Rolex forward by years - way more than I could have learned from reading vintage Rolex books.

i was looking for a 4digits Rolex.
came across @Megahz1 5513 Tutorial and I thought…hey maybe I can do this…

then the 1016 thread…and my brothers in that thread 😍 make the journey so much better

I am still a long way from the top gun modders out on here, but I am at a point where I am proud of what comes off my bench

I just wanted something that looked like the watches the blokes wore when I was a lad, something I could use and maintain myself without needing to panic over it getting scratched or abused.

No one told me it is a long dark rabbit hole that you can get lost in.
yes. and I 'm getting the feeling I may be following you down that dark rabbit hole, mate!
