Well I have made the decision to buy my first Panerai. At first I didn't really like them but the more I look at them the more I like them. I was looking at a model 111 as I have read this is a good entry watch. I was thinking either get it from greg or t4d or watch eden. I want to be able to wear brown staps with it as opposed to black straps. However I know nothing about the movements and want to spend around 100-150 for this starter watch just to make sure I enjoy it and it gets ample wrist time. I will upgrade to an after market strap more than likely. So my question is for the amount I'm looking to spend is the 111 a good choice? Is there anything I should look for like obvious give aways or even what movement would you all suggest for that price range. Thanks for the help

You should be able to get a decent 111 rep with the A6497 (non-swan neck) movement for that price. See what D4Me can find for you.

Most of the sandwich dials have the same flaws, so don't worry about that. Crown and CG are going to be the big differences at your price point.

Good luck!

D4m has that movement for right at 100 so I was leaning towards it because I have dealt with him in the past. What's the swan neck? I keep reading about it but can figure it out. Is not having a swan neck a dead giveaway?

Rep movements PERIOD are a dead giveaway, IMO. But, yes, the lack of swan neck is a flaw/inaccuracy.

Don't take it off your wrist and it's not an issue. :wink:

This is a movement with a dagger shaped regulator and a swan neck:

The swan neck is the curved piece of metal that goes around the regulator at the top of the movement (near the gold colored balance wheel).

This is a movement with a needle shaped regulator and no swan neck:

See the difference?

I do thank you. I figure that for an entry level watch it will be ok and if I fall like it more I can mod it or something. is the 111 from greg modable (its on his webpage)?

You sound just like me a year ago. I had never heard of Panerai until I found RWI. I just really like the look of them--and still do and bought my first as a result of a review I read here--and after Hooligan and the rest patiently answered all my interminable questions. I recently bought a UPO and realize that it really isn't my style--despite it being a fabulous rep. Give me the simplicity of the Panerai. I'm also a great fan of Bell & Ross for the same reason--though I gather that the Panerai camp and the Bell & Ross camp followers hate each other's products--and presumably each other too :lol: . That makes my life very dangerous :lol: I now have two Panerai, both of which I bought from Davidsen. I highly recommend Savage's aftermarket watch straps. My light brown pull-up (whatever 'pull-up' means--sounds like a type of diaper) looks absolutely wonderful on my Titanium brown dial 056. That is not to suggest that any of the other strap makers are less good: I just haven't bought their wares.

"Pull up" means that when you bend it, it gets lighter colored. :wink:

@COLDI - Yep, D4M's 111 @ $100 looks like a great starter PAM.
