Hey guys after some reps I now feel for a gen again. My B day is coming up in about three weeks and I have some I have been looking at. They are out for sale now (used watches) so if they are sold when the day comes so be it! Any how the watches I am looking at are.
Tag Heuer Monza cal 36 classic el primero. It looks to be a rare watch.

Next up is Breitling Superocean Heritage 46

Third is the Avenger chrono (I have the rep)

And last
A Rolex datejust from 1977 when I was born.
Either steel or two tone

They are all in the same price range so please advice me on what and why.

While I do like the blue Breitling Heritage the only gens I´ll ever consider buying going onwards are Rolex. They are the only ones holding their value very longterm and always easy to flip. And that Datejust is superclassic/beautiful.

Correct - Rolex seems to keep the value and even increase (some models/years) while other, Tudor, Tag´s Breitlings decrease . . . Go for the Rolex !

If you can snag the SOH or Avenger for a really good price, and they are out there, go for it. The 42mm SOH has been on my radar since it was introduced.

My taste does not lean towards Rolex or Tag, so I got nothin' there.

Id go with a Rolex. I have been looking more and more at Tudor though.
I am in the same situation, I have been putting money away and should be able to get a Gen Sub in March.

If I'm buying NEW I tend to look at gens as an investment as well as something I get ownership satisfaction from. Rolex (these days sports models are top dog number one), Patek-Philippe, Jaeger-Lecoultre, Panerai, Audemars Piguet, Vacheron Constantin tend to hold value.

If I'm buying USED, and if I think I'll resell in a year or two, I dip into the brands that have already taken a huge hit on depreciation. If I buy low, I can sell low. There I dabble in Omega, Breitling, Tag, Cartier, etc. With used if I want appreciation I buy Rolex but buy very carefully. Condition is everything in resale. I want gen boxes, papers, I want a history.

Unless I'm buying a Presidential from a President, I discount anything with a monogram or other engraving very heavily. Nobody wants someone elses engraved grandfathers retirement watch. That said, buy it cheap and slap a new back on it (or laser fill it with gold if its gold) and you've boosted its value a lot.

Honestly? I got some of my best watch deals from friends and by trolling AD's to see what they took in on trade. Just be sure you know what you are buying.

As a keeper? I'd happily buy reverse-frankened Rolex from BeckerTime (mentioned that this morning in another thread). Just understand that Rolex NYC will get pissy if you send it in to them for service with "branded" aftermarket dials, bezels, etc. You never want to send a gen watch thats been modded "home" ever again.

Lastly, like the above poster, I like Tudor. Your average man on the street never questions the authenticity of a Tudor and they are undervalued in the long run, IMO.

Thank you guys for your input. I wasn't supposed to buy a gen this year as I wanted to get one next year for my 40th birthday but I felt like getting one for 39 as well haha. I got my first gen when I turned 30 an Omega that I never sell. I look at all your advice and personal likings but the more I think about the ones I presented I realize that the Breitlings and the datejust is there up for grabs everyday of the year and the Tag Monza cal 36 is a very rare piece. I understand that it might attract less of a crowd if I want to flip it but This purchase is not to sell and get my money back. I never been interested in Tag as a brand until this came a long. Mmm what to do? I will get my self a Rolex for my 40th anyway and for the Breitling Superocean maybe I should just get a rep

If it was me in your shoes?

I'd get a rep of the gen I was considering.

Wear the heck out of it. Wear it with a suit, wear it with a bathing suit. Wear it on a plane, wear it on a train (and whatever other Dr Suess thing you can think of). See what you think and see what your friends think (if you care and if you have friends lol). Try to (jokingly of course) trade it for sex at seedy bars. Abuse it; make it do bad things in bad places. THAT is one of the key benefits of our rep hobby. Try before you buy. See how you feel. Do you get that tingle? Do you get that swagger six months later? Then and only then, buy the gen - especially if it is for a milestone like your 40th.

As to Rolex specifically? I would recommend to a younger man that he buy a gen steel Rolex very young... in his 20's - straight out of college. A gen Rolex is money in the bank and you can always sell it for what you pay if you care for it. People may doubt its "real" at first glance but hand it to them and even a watch-noob can feel the quality. Your boss at your company may question why a new-hire starting his life has a nicer watch than he does, but you can leverage that if you explain that its an investment in your future - just like your expensive diploma was. I bought my first gen Rolex when I was 19 and still have it (a used 5513) - never regretted it. The only watch I might buy today as a first watch (other than Rolex) is Tudor. Rolex is a brand that says "I aspire". Hell, even a rep says that - and I have no shame in wearing one - especially since to even my trained eye (I used to sell Rolex for an AD) I can't tell the better ones when they are on the wrist (hand it to me though and I usually know in a couple seconds). Ten years ago I could see a rep from across the room.

All these other brands - many of which have amazing complications that exceed Rolex in fashion and daring - don't say the same thing. BTW, Tudor is where Rolex expresses itself with fashion sense. Go there if Rolex is too old looking.

But again, thanks to RWI you can try before you buy. Catch and release as they say.

Use that to your full advantage :)
