Hi dan! welcome to the club!

everyone will most likely advise: read! when you're done reading the forums, read some more! there's lots of material here that's great for researching and making you aware of what's good and what's bad. The thing is to soak it all up before you make a purchase.

other than that, welcome to RWI! i dont know about me, but the rest of the crew here are an awesome laid back bunch. If you got any questions, feel free to just post em.

we have no [smilie=violent5.gif] FLAME WARS [smilie=violent5.gif] here :)

JOSHUA + SWISS = BEST COMBO FOR SURE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Welcome! I live in So. Cal too. (So. OC)

When in doubt ALWAYS go for the Swiss Movm'nt. Or maybe I should say if you have the $$$$. There really is no doubt, Swiss is best. Asian movm'nts can and do work out on occasion and there is no doubt they are getting better (7750b), but you will always run a much higher risk of getting a stinker with an Asian Movm'nt watch VS a Swiss Movm'nt watch. Plus, if you ever have to get your watched worked on, you are much more likely to get someone to work on a Swiss Movm'nt VS an Asian Movm'nt.

In the long run, go for the Swiss and the odds are that you will be really happy you did.

I would get the Asian 7750, have it cleaned/oiled and let it run 'til it dies. THEN get the Swiss movement to replace it, if you want (you'll need new hands, too, IIRC). Chances are that you'll get a couple of years enjoyment out of your rep before anything catastrophic happens. It'll spread out the total cost of ownership over time.

I can't see spending $600 right outta the gate for a Swiss 7750 powered rep.

Now, if you're talking non-chrono movements, sure get the Swiss, the price difference isn't that big.

Good luck. The biggie with the PAMs is the strap addiction that invariably follows. I've probably spent as much on straps as I have on watches.

I've even bought straps for reps I don't even have yet!

Nothing more embarrasing than some one saying "Nice Panerai/IWC/Brietling etc" and then looking down and seeing that it stopped running two hours ago. Can't really put a price on the fact that it is WAY less likely to happen with a Swiss ETA/Valjoux VS Asian. Trust me.

As far as cost to buy an Asian 7750 and wait till it dies? Yep, guaranteed to happen at the least likely time (see above) and let's look at the cost to "get the Asian 7750, have it cleaned/oiled and let it run 'til it dies. THEN get the Swiss movement to replace it" VS buying a watch with a Swiss Valjoux 7750.

Cost to service an Asian 7750 - Aprox. - $125.00 (per Ziggy)
Cost to swap Asian 7750 with Swiss 7750 - $50.00 (per Ziggy)
Cost of Swiss Valjoux 7750 new (ebay) - $300.00
Cost to ship to someone who will do the work - $25.00

TOTAL - $500.00 - to "get the Asian 7750, have it cleaned/oiled and let it run 'til it dies. THEN get the Swiss movement to replace it" Not including price of watch

Also, I have not even begun to factor in the hassles and costs to find and replace hands as many hands from an Asian 7750 will not fit to a Swiss Valjoux 7750/7753 - Not to mention that (again, per Ziggy) an Asian movm'nt should be serviced every two to three years where as Swiss movm'nt can go as much as five years or more before being serviced. (more cost in the long run for Asian movm'nt -assuming an Asian movm'nt will even last twenty years or more)

Difference in cost of buying a watch with Swiss Valjoux 7750/7753 VS Asian 7750 - Let's use a Pam188 from Joshua's site:
Pam188ss Asian - $318.00
Pam188ss Swiss - $728.00

Difference - $428.00

Now let's do some simple math. Subtract the difference of buying a watch with Asian 7750 VS Swiss ($428.00) from cost to "get the Asian 7750, have it cleaned/oiled and let it run 'til it dies. THEN get the Swiss movement to replace it" ($500.00)

$500.00
$428.00
----------
$72.00 SAVINGS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
PRESTO!!!! You can easily see if you buy a watch with a Swiss (7750) VS an Asian movm'nt not only will you SAVE money you will save the hassles and embaressment of having your watch die!!!

Of course you can always argue that you would do the labor yourself, can find a better price on a Swiss 7750, find a better deal on an Asian 7750 watch VS a Swiss 7750 etc, but TRUST ME like I said - for the average guy out there "In the long run, go for the Swiss and the odds are that you will be really happy you did."
- (not too mention that you will probably save some money too!!)

GOOD LUCK

Thank you --- thank you again for the advise and detail comparison.. wow.. So far what i have is unitas 6497 pam rep and yeah i would rather spend my saving  on the original swiss. i might have to wait a bit longer to get the swiss instead of regreting it at the end when getting the asian 7750.
Thank you both for the friendly opinions swap. Thank jake and peepshow.
I will contact Josh or andreww is it...?? to get more information on their pam 253 Swiss.

PS: Jake48, does it means the original swiss will be less maintanence or do I still need to bring the watch for service every year ?? Thanks

Best Regards,
Dan

well what jake is saying is that the asian 7750's is a crap movement that breaks down easily unless it's been cleaned and serviced. you will find tons of info on asian 7750's reliability as a chronograph.

The swiss one should not require initial service - just your standard servcie every 5-10 years.

ps: an asian 7750 in a watch that doesnt have a chrono function, like some pannie luminor autos, seems good. Mine hasnt broken down yet (knock on wood)

OK - I will give it one more go, but I am at work and I know they expect me to do a little something before I go home...

Unitas 6497 Asian Vs Swiss 6497 is a whole nother animal. Sometimes, in my opinion it is worth buying the Asian version of the 6497 (no exhibition back for example) Vs the Swiss. The Asian 6497 is much more reliable than the Asian 7750 (and yes, even the 7750b) when compared to thier Swiss counterparts. The only problem with my logic here, is that the price difference between an Asian 6497 Vs a Swiss 6497 is way less than with the 7750's (usally around $100.00) - Therefore - I might just go for the Swiss 6497 anyways...

As far as service goes there are so many variables - How often to you wear the watch? Do you wear it in harsh or extreme climates? Do you care if it is water resitant? etc. If you are serious about maintaining your watch and it is the only watch you wear and you want to ensure that it keeps it's waterproofness (is that a word?) you would have it serviced once a year.

If you are like most people and you rotate your watches through a "collection" you can probably get away with not servicing the watch for at LEAST three or four years or more. I have a Gen Omega Speedmaster that was built in '69 . I have owned it 15 yrs and have had it serviced once. It keeps time + - 2 sec a day and is one of my best running watches - go figure!

I guess the best way to give your watches longer life is to BUY MORE WATCHES! (Just try convincing your wife /girlfriend of that!)

Good Luck!
