Heading to Guangzhou Watch Market

Hi guys..

I will be mid of October in Gz and I plan to visit the watch market.

I've been there several times, last time in march this year but only for a moment. Didn't have time to look around..

This time I plan to spend a little bit more time. Was anybody there recently? What to look for? (probably I will be meeting my dealer there).

What are the budget reps these days which are considered super reps? Something which eventually can be obtained in the range ~150$/watch..

I have on the radar the AP Diver, PAM605, PAM690, PAM768 (I'm a sucker for Panerai, I know..)

I've been on the look for quiet some time for a nice chinese tourbillon powered rep. Anything there worth to be purchased?

I was looking for this one, no longer available from the dealers. I'd give my right nut for it..

If so, good luck finding the same quality and pricing that you can get from TDs. It's nice to look around, but you really are better off just buying from a TD. There is a guy on the first floor near the excalator that can get noob, jf, etc but you'll get a headache negotiating TD pricing.

That's Louhu commercial center in Shenzhen. he is talking about one of the major watch trade markets in Guangzhou, where it is also impossible to find TD quality without being fluent in Cantonese and having many knowledgeable contacts.

HK is bordering Shenzhen. Will be there as well (Shz) and I will be visiting the market over there (Luohu commercial city) but not hunting for reps over there. In general I think the rep hunt will be more "window shopping" since nothing lately has got me that excited to be a must have..

Nevertheless I am still eager to hear what is a budget rep considered as a great buy..

My score so far..

Two great reps and one fantasy RD which is absolutely amazing. I really do not care that this is actually a fantasy RD it is supersexy and the details are really nice.

Let's see if the following days bring something new..

Sounds like a fun trip, but yeah, I've yet to hear of anyone getting TD quality or pricing st the market.

Offhand, the Tudor Ranger, Black Bays, Rolex D-Blue, legacy Rolex's are pretty good with 2813s

So over the weekend i dropped by the Yuexiu district of Guangzhou. At the heart of the infamouse replica watch market, things are less than what I have expected.

After arriving at the metro, just google for watch shop and you can see they are all clustered around the north of the train station.

The area is a sprawling urban complex with fake watches and clothing aplenty, including leather goods and fake shoes. The watches are all located in open kiosks on the ground floor and manned by hundreds if not thousands of people.

The first shop I hit showed me a PAM616. Fortunately I happen to be wearing the same watch on my hand and the seller immediately knows I am not kidding around when he passed me a cheap fake PAM616 which he claims to be made of carbon fiber but is in fact stainless steel with CF print. Seller had a look at my watch and immediately says he doesn't not have a similar type of watch. Moving on!

Next shop i went to had a few PAM models on display but they were all visibly less 'perfect' than the few REPS that I personally own. Opening prices for these less than stellar reps are about 700 but I suppose it can be bargained down a fair bit. I showed them my PAM616 again so that they know I am after the good stuff, and a few phone calls later, a bunch of luminors and submersibles appeared in front of me for inspection. Opening prices for these are higher than the TD listed prices, so I made my displeasure known and left.

Long story short, I probably spent about 2 hours wandering around getting a hang of the area and realized that all the top grade reps is not in stock because the demand right now are for reps in the 500-700 yuan range, and sellers are at a huge disadvantage when they carry high quality but also more expensive watches. Hence the reason why the good stuff only comes out when you request for it.

One thing I learned is that the factories have started adjusting to these new price points and have started to make some really good reps at this lower price point. Some of the 300 dollar Omegas are so convincing in quality that you would wonder why pay more when you can have it at almost disposable prices?

I finally hit some gold when I chanced upon a girl sitting behind a counter with a bunch of high grade bronzos and subs from Panerai. They are also all hidden behind the counter and only produced when the sales person knows I am looking for the good stuff. One thing I notice is that the high grade reps all come with soft protective silicone sleeves on the watch face, while the cheaper replicas use a much harder plastic. Not the best of tips to differentiate the replica grades but definitely something to look out for.

The prices quoted are a bit on the high side (similar to TD prices...so why bother?) and she keep insisting they are produced 'in-house', so I took her contact and went off.

The next shop held more promise, as the seller had a whole bunch of PAM on display and upon inspecting they appear to be high grade reps being sold at the 700-1000 price point. Great news for thrifty buyers like me, so contact is exchanged and off I go.

The final contact I got was from a small unassuming kiosk which didn't even have any watches on display (they are all covered by a white cloth due to a police presence nearby) but I showed him a picture of a Glaschutte Senator Sixties and he immediately told me they have two grades, one at 1300 and another at 1600 yuan (YL and GF Factory, apparently). Quite a fair discount over what TDs are requesting for which is about 300 USD, and the seller promise to produce both watches for me to evaluate and choose. I told him I will be coming back next weekend to see if the 300 yuan additional is worth it.

So long story short, don't expect to see high grade replicas on open display and be prepared to ask for them if you want to inspect. Most sellers will only have a few units on stock but they are usually those with greater demand eg Panerais and Rolexes. Most shops CAN bring over high grade reps but you may have to wait for a few hours while they source for it (so be prepared to stay an extra day). The purpose of my trip was to go down and grab some contacts and from there I can slowly learn more about how the new rep scene is working now in Guangzhou.

I managed to pick up a PAM177 while I was there. This is supposedly the Noob version going for 1400 yuan, a fair discount off the prices of ordering it online. Many places however have stopped selling them due to being out of stock. Happy with the purchase and will hopefully go down again next week to have a look at the Glaschutte SS!
