Have you changed your GEN purchase because of what you know about replicas?

Recently I have been fortunate enough to be in the market for a gen (first one in a while).

I must admit, my criteria for gen have changed completely since I got into the rep game.

My criteria were:
1) there must not be a replica available that is legitimately comparable (e.g. Diver, PAM 111, etc)
2) it must have an exhibition caseback with a non-ETA movement (rules out almost all watches except high-end)
3) it must be from a brand that is not being replicated with great accuracy or with great quantity (rules out rolex, pam, some ap, etc)

Basically, this meant that I could not ever see myself spending less than 10K on a gen watch again.
Although there were many watches I liked under 10K, most watches under 10K from major brands are simple enough to be replicated with reasonable accuracy.

So that has been my experience.
How about you guys?

If I was to go gen again ( I had a JLC master compressor diving GMT which was stolen from me and then I entered the rep world) it would definitely be for "non-repable" like a Girard Perregaux or a complicated Jaeger LeCoultre again...

Buying a Pam is not a wise move after all I've seen here and in other rep forums...:)

Yeah, if you buy a gen PAM model of something that is super repped you are just dumb.

Its just not really worth it to me for the same of any brand. Something like a gen Speedmaster, and complicated movements and non-repped watches as panasol said is obviously a more sound choice.

After delving deeper and deeper into the world of PAM Reps, I now just can't see myself dropping thousands of dollars on a Gen.

The quality of some of the Rep PAMs are so good, it's amazing.

Add a Gen. croc strap, superlume and/or AR where necessary and hey presto! A brilliant looking PAM rep for a small fraction of the Gen. price.

I went to the Pam boutique in NYC. The only difference to me on some of the models there is that the straps are nicer.

A friend has a gen 321 and its a stunning piece. With the power reserve complication it's not repped well and truly the finish on the case, the crystal and the dial especially the cutouts really make it stand out as a gen.

I am looking for a gen 14060 or 116000 Rolex right now and lucky me there are no good reps of these! I don't have the wrists for a pam but I totally agree with you guys, looking at how good the reps are it would be stupid to put that much money in a gen

I have an interesting response I think (or dilemma). Since I have had my Omega PO42 I have decided I will likely upgrade that one to a Gen within the year. The odd part here is I was going to get the Gen Tudor BB next on the list, but I am leaning away from it because I think the rep market is going to be flooded with them I am shying away. Maybe I will go with the Pelagos.

I'm the opposite, I will never buy a gen again. If the watch I like isn't repped I will just pick something else

Why exactly is this an issue?

Because you give away your hard earned money easier if no super rep of the watch exists

I have had gen Breitling Blackbird, JLC Master Compressor Diving, JLC Master Compressor Diving Chrono.........I have sold them all and only have a nice Breitling Skyland Avenger Rep and a POS Panerai Arktos rep which is a poor quality rep.

For me although the money aspect does come into play abit, its not the most important reason why for now I am more into rep's.

When I had the gen 5-10K watches, I never wore them and wore the rep's instead cause I didnt want to scratch, lose the real ones...so the gen's just sat there for me to look at but never wore....when I had both JLC gen's I wore them like 5 times in 2 yrs.

Whereas the rep's I could care less if I scratch them or lose them.

So its more of a piece of mind for me.

Wonder how it feels to sit and stare at your freshly bought $10.000 gen sitting on the table next to your $300 noob super rep that looks identical. I bet it's not a good feeling.

I could care less that a rep exists of the gen I own. If I like the watch and want the gen, I go for it, end of story. SeaMaster, Steelfish, PO, 243 ..doesn't matter.

For me it's about the destination in the end. I am sure all of you have varying opinions.

Now, to directly answer the OP's question, I don't think I would ever get the 111 Panerai, it's rep it's too good, and I would never pay the gen price for an ETA manual wind. There again, some of you, may not have the same opinion.

Here is another issue...when I had the genuine, esp the JLC Diving Chrono, I asked my insurance agent if homeowners policy covered my watches and he said not really...only covers one watch for 1000.00 and thats it...so this made me nervous cause we have many people running in and out of my house due to kids and cleaning people and etc...so this made me even more nervous, as these watches were sitting in my office on watch winders.

Another reason rep's better for me.

Lastly, when I bought the gen used JLC Diving Chrono, it was horribly scratched and being the nice guy I am I said I would fix it using my own money via JLC Repair Facility but when I sent it back to JLC factory they wanted the replace the scratched bezel at a cost of 2500.00 and also wanted to replace many more parts at a total cost of 6000.00!...I only paid 6500.00 for watch used!!!!...they said the scratches on bezel was too deep to repair and had to replace it.

So I made the guy take the watch back but he refused...got paypal and my CC company involved but I missed cutoff by 2 days as it took JLC factory forever to get me a repair estimate.

Paypal and my CC really wouldnt help me.

So I just sent the watch back to the guy and forced him to take it back...:)...and "only" then my CC company and Paypal made him return my money.

So I learned a very valuable lesson... never trust a guy off of ebay saying watch is in "excellent" shape when its obviously not...this also left a horrible taste in my mouth in gen's as it took me 3 months to resolve this issue.

And I can also get 20 nice rep watches for price of one decent gen one I wasnt going to wear very often anyway....

There is always this......

I built this watch with custom parts for less than 1/10th of the cost of a Gen. if it's repped well a Gen is a waste.

This watch, on the other hand, is worth every penny of the 8k IMO.
